Rising Stars: Meet Gregga Prothero

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gregga Prothero.

Hi Gregga, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Gregga Prothero, I was born in the Philippines and came to California when I was 4 years old and have lived in LA county since.

I’ve been experimenting on friend’s hair since high school. It always sparked a curiosity.

Growing up in a traditional Filipino household, there is always pressure to go into the medical field, and when I decided to attend cosmetology school, the drama ensued. I was determined, though, and attended cosmetology school at night while working five days a week as a office secretary on top of being a receptionist at Toni & Guy Salon on the weekends. Once cosmetology school was done, though, I felt relieved, determined, excited and ready to cut and color.

Flash forward 13 years later, I’m still at it!

I met my now husband, Colin, 10 years ago while he was in architecture school at UCLA. I’ve always dreamed of owning my own salon and together we joined our creative forces to collaborate and build a space for beauty/ hair services that embodies both of our strengths.

With my enthusiasm for hair and gregarious personality combined with his keen aesthetic eye, we were able to cultivate Gregga L.A., an artistic salon space with laid back vibes for new and visiting L.A. locals.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We decided to get this going in February 2020… we and the rest of the world had NO IDEA what was in store for us.

Like everyone at first I thought the pandemic was only going to be 2-3 weeks and everything will be “back to normal “…..NOPE. It was definitely a true test of patience, determination and just rolling with the punches. Seeing other businesses and people struggling was very saddening and I kept wondering if it was the right choice to continue.

But something kept pushing and telling me to continue. One major motivator was Colin, my husband. He always helped me see the different solutions and ways we could thrive and succeed.

As much as I was filled with uncertainty, I just couldn’t give up.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a hairstylist that focuses on effortlessly chic colors and haircuts. I specialize in combining vivid/creative color with a lived-in look.

I’m most proud of creating a space for talented hairstylists to come together and boom as they work on current trends and new techniques, as well as mastering the classics.

I’m so fortunate to create a welcoming neighborhood spot to both indulge and transform L.A. heads one hair at a time.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I’d love to meet other hair artists that want to work in an environment that encourages growth and let’s them shine in their own unique way, or collaborate and brainstorm on some creative ideas for a photoshoot!

If I see the passion and heart behind their work, then they are a perfect fit for our team.
