Rising Stars: Meet Ela Ozturk

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ela Ozturk.

Hi Ela, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve actually been a musician my whole life. I grew up as a choir kid and always enjoyed singing. I started singing at two years old and started writing songs at six years old. My late father was also a musician and encouraged me to sing, write, and perform. I fell in love with soul music as a kid and studied the great soul “diva” singers that helped shape my sound today. Artists such as Aretha Franklin, Etta James, and Nina Simone really inspire my artistry. I started putting out music in 2020, and I have been on my musical journey ever since.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road that’s for sure! Being an independent artist is a lot of hard work. It took me years to find a team of people to work with and over a year to make and release my first song. I encountered a lot of setbacks, failures, and tribulations before I was even able to get anything started in my musical career. It still isn’t easy, but I put all my time, energy, and soul into what I do. I fund all of my projects independently. Which allows me the creative freedom I need to make the art I want, but also puts me in a situation where I have to pick and choose what I can do at a given time.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Good question! I would say I am a storyteller, and music is the medium I use to put out my story into the world. I am a songwriter at my very core, and songwriting is and will always be the greatest love of my life. I am also a singer and musician, and I would say I am known for my confessional lyrics and soulful sound. What sets me apart from others is my distinctive voice and my emotional lyrics, as well as my ability to make music that connects with the everyday struggles of life many can relate to.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Definitely! 2020 was a tough year for us all. The pandemic, I think, showed how important community is and how we all needed to reconnect with one another. Through the hard moments of the Covid-19 crisis, there was a sense of togetherness that I was really moved by. It was great to see so many people helping one another in such a tough time.
