Today we’d like to introduce you to Dejah Gomez.
Hi Dejah, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Rogers Park, IL north side of Chicago, I would rise and rest to the sound of music. My father is a musician, a bassist and was bandleader for a reggae band. Our living room was the studio. At the age of five, while visiting church with my mother during visitation, I saw a girl and her mother singing on stage. It was then, at that very moment, that I developed the desire to do the same.
I sang in school, for events, holidays, talent shows. I was the voice of Eugene Field Elementary. I sang in church, Second Baptist Church in Evanston, IL and was discovered at the age of 14, signed at 15 and released my debut album at the age of 16. I had videos and radio play, however the independent record label UN-D-NY-ABLE by Chicago White Sox’s “THE BIG HURT” Frank Thomas folded.
From there, at the age of 18 I began working with Jackie Taylor of the Black Ensemble Theater. I starred as Cinderella in her “Other Cinderella” and I starred as Harlean and Etta James in her “Jackie Wilson Story.” Shortly after, I was encouraged to audition for Broadway’s The Lion King Musical. I had no idea what I was doing, nor did I know anything about musicals. I was 1 of 10 chosen out of the hundreds who auditioned and I began a masterclass. Eventually, I joined the company after a few years of development and went on to do three companies of Disney’s The Lion King Broadway Musical covering the roles of Nala and Sarabi while in the ensemble.
After I first left the Cheetah Company of Disney’s Lion King, I relocated to Los Angeles where I began my career as a backing vocalist. I sang at West Angeles Church of God in Christ and was a part of the music ministry and praise and worship teams. From here, I was introduced to Mr. Jason White, the Master of Music Ministry. He culled me and welcomed me to sing with him for American Idol choir. It was here where I met Rickey Minor who continued to open doors for me and led me to Stevie Wonder. He had a vocalist at the time call me and ask if I would like to sing with Stevie Wonder in Austria for the Austrian Jazz Festival.
From here, I toured nationally and internationally with Michael Bolton, Kelis, Diddy Dirty Money, Jennifer Hudson, Peabo Bryson & Marilyn McCoo & Billie Davis Jr., Chris Botti…
After touring for a few years, I felt a stirring inside of me. I grew dissatisfied with my work and profession so I began searching for something more, something bigger, more soul-fulfilling and soul-nourishing.
My spiritual counselor at the time introduced me to Kundalini Yoga and it changed my life for good. It brought me closer to the feeling that felt true to me. It felt good, it felt right. After ten years of practice, I decided to take Level 1 training and become a certified teacher to pass on the sacred technology. From here, I began to expand into energy healing, studying Reiki, Hypnotherapy, Sound Healing and this made my soul come alive. I felt so rich inside, so fulfilled and incredibly inspired.
Now I feel purposeful and extremely clear with my intention and how I want to use my gifts and talents. I have clarity and confidence to carry out my soul’s mission and work.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not! I was my biggest obstacle. I was my biggest challenge. I was my biggest fear. I needed to get out of my own way. I needed to heal and forgive myself first, reconnect to my divinity and my truth. I stopped believing in myself and my purpose and lacked the clarity I needed to show up confidently.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I sing and when I sing, I heal. I am a clean and clear channel of divine love and light.
I use my entire being, breath, body, mind, and soul to create spaces for healing and to introduce people to their inner healer, light and truth.
I specialize in singing and using the voice to tune the body as a whole body instrument.
I am known and loved for my singing and speaking voice and making people feel and heal deeply.
I am most proud of my courage to use my gifts, talents, and prowess for the purpose of healing and elevation, to uplift, inspire and encourage. I love how I show up in the world. I love how wonderfully made I am.
My sound, frequency and vibration set me apart. There is only one Dejah that can do what Dejah was created to do. My energetic imprint sets me apart. I am in total surrender to my Source and the work my soul is here to do.
I am a student of psychology and have always been fascinated by the human mind and human behavior. Having a special needs child informed me of how I could use my gifts to support special needs children and families. For years, I left the stage and began behavioral and psychological services as a Behavioral Therapist.
My services include: Keynote Concerts, Speaking, Kundalini Yoga, Vocal & Performance Technique Coaching, Reiki, Sound Healing, Hypnotherapy, Spiritual Counseling.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Connect to yourself and your Source first. Let that be the first connection that you care to make before any other. From there, you will attract from your point of being. When you are ready, the support you need will be provided for you. Pay attention, remain focused and intentional, rooted in your purpose. I recommend having mentors to guide and direct your steps, to listen and teach you what you need to learn. Be your authentic self, and you will attract everything and everyone you need to support you along your path. Be sincere. Be true to yourself. Be you.
All of my mentors and teachers arrived when I was ready to learn and able to recognize and respect the gift of their presence in my life.
