Today we’d like to introduce you to Dana Rexx.
Hi Dana, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started singing when I was 5 or 6 years old. I taught myself by imitating my idols from those days like Madonna, Cher, Gloria Estefan, Michael Jackson, Eurythmics, Queen, and Fleetwood Mac,… these artists are all so different from each other, which gave me a very eclectic view on combining genres when making my own music. At the age of 17, I also became a DJ and had a residency in a well-known Hardcore House club on the outskirts of Antwerp in Belgium. Now I combine elements of that hard style of music in my power pop songs which gives them an electronic feel with a dark edge.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’m just going to be honest and say no, the road was and is not smooth at all. As all artists will know the music bizz is the worst industry to work in. There are next to no regulations and that brings along all the sharks, cowboys and scammers. Add misogyny and sexism to the mix, which makes the mud thicker and even harder to wade through. This is something I have recently become very vocal about. I have had enough of all the posing and blatant lying that these people do, so now I am exposing this kind of behavior and making people aware of the red flags by talking about it in my podcast ‘Unboxing Women’ (unboxingwomen.com), where I explore the gender gap in the music & entertainment industry with my co-host.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Right now, I am preparing the release of my new single ‘Rebel’ coming out on 23 November 2022! I’m really looking forward to unleashing this song onto the world. I’ve been evolving my sound since the release of my previous EP ‘Babylon’ last year and I love this new direction that stays true to my non-definable dark style. ‘Rebel’ is an unapologetic rallying cry to those who are different from the norm. I wrote this song for all the misfits, outcasts and rebels out there. It’s OK to be different and it’s OK that you don’t want to fit in. I’ve been struggling with this my whole life and I have come to accept that I will always be seen as the weird one, so I am embracing it. In turn, I want to create a safe place for all the other weirdos out there, so put your fist up cause I can tell that you’re a Rebel! You’ll want to stay tuned for more, because this is just the beginning. I’m gearing up to release a new single every three months going forward and I will be opening for Anastacia on 8 dates of her European tour from 26 January to 6 February 2023. I am also planning an Asian tour in September 2023, so keep your eyes on my website and socials for news & tickets!
What do you like and dislike about the city?
Because of Covid, I haven’t been in LA for a couple of years now and I really miss it! Not only the weather but the vibe is so energetic and there is an opportunity around every corner. Besides Hollywood, I love to hang out in Burbank and Studio City. I would love to come back soon for some good networking and of course a long-overdue shopping spree.
