Today we’d like to introduce you to Zach Titterington.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
In a previous life, I was a lighting designer for theatre actually! This was pursued to the point of an MFA in theatrical and entertainment design from UCLA and working around LA for the past couple years. My love of creating live art was found within crafting dynamic compositions and telling stories through color and light. I viewed the aperture of a stage as a window into a living painting and this state of mind led me to sketching and painting in my free time constantly. I delved into all aspects of design from scenery to the nuances of costume and characters. Eventually my love of mythology began seeping into my work and I found myself drawing all the legends and lore I grew up loving.
Goetia: Kings of Hell, came from a want to create a series of paintings that illustrated demon lore in a single collection. I grew up around a lot of christian imagery and have always thought the lack of infernal iconography left an imbalance in the history of art. This project sought to add to the timeless lore with a more modern fantasy interpretation.
The Goetia comes from The Lesser Key of Solomon, a 17th-century grimoire that (among other things) contains descriptions of the daemons encountered and captured by the biblical King Solomon. Essentially it is a grand dictionary of 72 infernal spirits. Kings of Hell is the first book of four, containing my original paintings for the 16 Kings and Princes that rule over sects of Hell. Book 2 will showcase Dukes, Book 3: Marquises and Knights, and Book 4: Counts and Presidents.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
So far so good! I have had a wonderful outpouring of support from the Kickstarter community Having a select audience of people that are just as excited to see each painting come to life as you are is a thrilling experience. I can’t begin to express the gratitude I have for those backers. We are scheduled to release Kings of Hell late this December.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
The act of painting mythology in series isn’t a foreign concept. That being said demon lore doesn’t find its way into mainstream culture as often as it has in the past few years. Films like Hereditary and other demon/witch related media have kindled interest in something previously taboo that I think has happened to work in my favor.
What were you like growing up?
Just like most angsty nerd kids growing up in the suburbs of central Florida I was into all the clichés: dark fantasy games, Lovecraft, gritty movies, heavy metal. But I was also invested in traditional arts. I spent a lot of time studying the old masters of painting like Goya and Rembrandt, all while pouring over books about modern theatrical design. I suppose reflecting on it my style now makes a lot of sense!
