Today we’d like to introduce you to Yunbing Li.
Yunbing, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I originally worked for one of the biggest production companies Youku as the associate producer, then I get a chance to study film oversea at the University of California, Berkeley, which totally changed my mind and my career path. I decide to go to America and become an independent filmmaker.
In the past two years, I kept creating short films, one of my latest work gets me a Best New Director Award in the 2019 Asian Film Festival. I am glad to see my film get more and more audience and my idea gets to deliver to the public. I have worked as a freelance filmmaker for various clients and we created great content together. Besides, deeply affected by one of my immersive classes professor, I began to explore the possibilities of immersive storytelling by using VR/XR as my media tool. Along with my video production skills, I also help my clients use immersive tools to promote their brand.
Has it been a smooth road?
It’s never a smooth road. Filmmaking is a really struggling process from the beginning toward the end. For example, one of my films, Evasion, is a limited budget Sci-Fi film. It spent me almost one year to finally polish the script and get the script ready for production. Then comes to the most challenge part – visualize script, not just the shot list/storyboard but also visualize the acting, the art look. In the script, I have a brain as the most important props that lead to the reveal/climax, which is really hard to get when I was still in Maryland (There is no prop house or any resource for films) I had to try a lot of really practical solution: Use really pork brain, cow brain, use chemical-based on doctor’s suggestion… with all kinds of creative solutions, we finally make the story come true.
In a word, the most struggles along the way are to turn everything from the words into visual images, but luckily it’s also the most creative and enjoyable process. It’s really challenging but also really amazing.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am a freelance filmmaker that provides video production service to clients in the whole country, including video directing/producing, video post-production service and on-location sound mixing. As a VR developer, I can also provide VR/XR development services to clients with needs.
Different from some video production houses, I am not only a live-action filmmaker but can also provide immersive production, for example, the volumetric capture skill I can provide is able to give clients a 3D 180-degree green screen footage. Besides, with good knowledge of Unity/Unreal Game Engine, I can provide our clients with the various environments for VFX.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
LA is a great place for video production and freelancer. It has a lot of opportunities, and also resources as I mentioned before. The amazing rental house here provides almost everything that can make your client’s visual treatment come true.
