Today we’d like to introduce you to Yas Nomura.
Yas, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised in Saitama, Japan. In 2007, I started playing guitar when I was 14. Next year in 2008, I entered a music high school in Tokyo and learned technique, ensemble and music theory.
When I was about 17, I started considering about moving to LA to study music. In 2011, after graduating from high school, I worked for a year to save up. Then the next year in 2012 in the end of June, I moved to Long Beach. I was there for about three months to attend an English. Same year in October, I entered Musicians Institute Hollywood. Studied from Allen Hinds, Scott Henderson and other great musicians. I started playing bass guitar as well in 2014. I got to do a clinic at MI in 2019.
I graduated from MI in 2014 and started my career as a professional guitarist and bassist. Since then, I have toured/played in the US, Europe and Asia. I have played for Mateus Asato[bass], Felix Martin[bass] and Hyde(singer from Japan’s one of the biggest rock bands) [guitar] and others.
I also have two bands The Resonance Project [guitar&bass] and Hyvmine [bass]. The Resonance Project released its self-titled debut album in 2019.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been tough. Seemed like it only started pay off last year. There was a lot of financial struggles through the years as well.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have tried to release more of my own music rather than being a sideman.
