Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Wiideman.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Steve. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My passion for Internet and digital marketing started while I was still serving in the U.S. Army in the late 90’s. When my tour of duty ended, I jump straight into website design as a freelancer, while holding down a position with IBM Global Services, coincidentally as a specialist in migrating print output to the web.
As my craft improved, so did my desire to be the best I could at promoting my clients across the web. I went back to school and earned a degree in E-Business Management, encompassing the full array of technology, content, and project management required to master internet marketing.
The late 2000’s took me through a wild ride of amazing opportunities with companies as large as Disney and as Director of Search for a handful of digital agencies. During my corporate years, I wrote and sold multiple information products and started to work on my personal brand as “SEO Steve”.
In 2010, I left the corporate world to venture on my own as an independent consultant, working with incredibly exciting brands to create a foundation strategy and advise on implementation of technical, contextual, and off-page search engine optimization best practices.
In 2015, I incorporated and change our name from Steve Wiideman, SEO Expert, to Wiideman Consulting Group. We opened three offices and have a staff of 10 consultants, all specializing in different niche disciplines of SEO, including location and multi-location search, e-commerce, and lead-generation. Our client roster includes Skechers, Applebee’s, and Technicolor USA, along with a handful of SMB clients.
How I got to where I am today involved staying ahead of the curve with new technology and changes in how search engines rank content. To do this, I created comprehensive Twitter lists and used Feedly to aggregate the best RSS feeds in each search marketing niche, giving me the most powerful 30-45 minutes a day to keep up-to-date before I head off to work.
As a business owner, you need to step out of your comfort zone and put yourself out there as an authority. Doing so drives a ridiculous amount of brand awareness and personal branding that not only grows your business but really impacts your own ability to achieve your dreams.
Has it been a smooth road?
Being an entrepreneur is like Saran-wrapping yourself and having to figure out how to live without being able to reach your wallet or move more than a few feet at a time. Worse, one day you wake up and realize that you actually paid someone for that Saran wrap with borrowed money. So there you are, bootstrapping on a shoestring budget with each month promising growth and delivering a waterfall of new hurdles with hard costs, resource management issues, and can’t-say-no marketing opportunities.
To survive, our consultancy had to leverage capital services such as Fundbox, take insane merchant cash advances from providers like SnapCap, and utilize factoring to pay employees while waiting for invoices to come in. It was a tough road to get through, but definitely worth the struggle in the end.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
There’s a reason you’ll usually find us on the first page of Google for the phrase “SEO Expert”, we clearly love what we do when it comes to consulting in the area of search engine optimization and marketing. You have to practice what you preach after all.
Here is a video with some background on us and our team: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIzbrMPosBU
In a nutshell, we create audits and strategies for our clients to help build action lists for technical SEO, content at every phase of the buyer’s journey, and off-page visibility strategies to earn links without the need for outbound calls or outreach. We then stay on board to help our clients and their respective team members complete tasks in order of priority and effort level.
What makes us different is our appreciation for transparency. You can’t have proprietary intellectual property if it’s sourced from the search engine themselves.
There’s no secret sauce in SEO, you need only do what search engines recommend better than the competition and avoid sneaky short-lived tactics that cause penalties. We thrive on transparency, community collaboration and constantly testing ideas.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I can’t imagine a better city to have our consultancy in. We are feet from the 5 Freeway for clients and prospects to come visit us. The office spaces are limited, since most of the city is residential, but if you can’t find a place, La Mirada is really the place to be.
