Meet Wendy Samano of Baby Pastries in El Monte

Today we’d like to introduce you to Wendy Samano.

Wendy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My love for baking started at a young age watching my Abuela make tortillas a mano. That smell of flour and manteca filled the air as I helped her roll out round shaped dough into my version of “circles” which were more like deformed faces and ovals. I loved spending time in the kitchen with her, it brought me much needed comfort and joy.

Fast forward to 2010, I enrolled in Culinary School with the help of my parents, I decided to take the baking route which came naturally for me. After five years of complete dedication to the art form, I decided to make a name for myself and that is when Baby Pastries was created. I wanted a memorable name that combined my love for art and my passion for baking.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My challenges were focusing in large scale kitchens and trying my hardest to work “the line” and keep up with the big shots. I found joy in being a part of a team and learned how to work together eventually, let’s just say a kitchen is definitely not for the weak at heart. It is a lot of long nights and hard labor, but you find that strength within yourself to keep pushing and striving for goals. I honestly grew to love it.

Baby Pastries – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My business is a small bakeshop where we specialize in scratch-made cakes and other sweets to satisfy any sweet tooth. I am truly proud that my hard work paid off and I built something from the ground up with little money and a huge desire to be my own boss. My parents are Mexican immigrants who came to this country to live an honest and happy life, ultimately I want to continue to build on that foundation of love that they laid out for me and make my daughter proud and confident that she, too can live to her fullest potential.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me means waking up every morning with a full heart and clear mind, setting a goal and accomplishing that goal. Going to sleep knowing that somehow I made a difference, whether big or small in someone’s life brings me a lot of peace.
