Meet Virgilia Barrera

Today we’d like to introduce you to Virgilia Barrera.

Virgilia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started teaching yoga in 2010 following my desire to help the Latin community to have a healthier lifestyle through movement and meditation. On another note, I am also always looking to improve and implement new styles into my practice. One way I have been doing this has been by introducing somatic therapeutic movement, which can help to relieve trauma or emotional inner discomfort.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest struggle I found along the way was during the pandemic when many yoga studios were shut down and human contact was restricted. I then had to adjust to teaching virtually, but now I’m thankful for the growth that came with it. I am glad to say that I still teach an online class weekly to help people navigating these stressful times from different parts of California.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I teach yoga with emphasis on gentle movements to tone the vagus nerve and somatic movements that focus more on the inner experience rather than creating expectations on how a pose is supposed to look like. I’m proud of how I have learned to cultivate a sense of presence so that when I’m with my clients, they feel seen.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Prepare by setting money aside so you don’t have to face financial stress. Know that it can take some time to get your name recognized and to establish a stable clientele.
