Today we’d like to introduce you to Vicki Cooper.
Vicki, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up in Southern California, went to school at Pepperdine and have been a Malibu resident my entire adult life. My mother was a huge advocate for natural, organic foods (and this was during the “Wonder Bread” era), starting at age 12 she took me to nutrition classes where I learned the importance of plant-based nutrition and eating healthy. My belief was always that it didn’t make sense to eat healthy and yet apply toxic ingredients to my skin.
I started my skincare career in one of the most prestigious skin salons on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills as a make-up artist. It was there that I saw that the products that were being used were detrimental to the skin. Horrible ingredients of paraffin waxes, sulfates and all types of toxic chemicals were in every product. I knew that there had to be something better. I started researching and quickly discovered that there was literally nothing on the market for skin that was “natural.”
With this in mind, I started the first salon and spa in Malibu in the Colony Plaza, and I continued developing products and treatments with herbs and essential oils for treatments for my clientele. My journey of education and discovery into natural skin care ingredients led me to create Ecologica Skin Care.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Shortly after opening my first small business, my husband and I divorced and I was left a single mom of two boys (a newborn and 5 years old at the time) with no spousal or child support. I was struggling financially to keep us afloat.
Everything that could go wrong did. One of the biggest fires hit Malibu that year and my salon was actually used as a Fire Department sub-station. I didn’t know how I would survive and how I would be able to care for my children. It was with all the strength and hard work that I could muster that I went into high gear, building my clientele and reputation.
Soon, word got out… not just in Malibu, but throughout Los Angeles and nationally. I often think that perhaps if I hadn’t had the strife, I wouldn’t have been able to fully experience the success.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Ecologica Skin Care Malibu – what should we know?
Ecologica was one of the very first natural skin care lines. The line utilizes powerful plants and herbs for beneficial and effective skin results. I’ve continued to develop the product line which was once only available in my spa/salon.
It’s exciting to be able to reach a larger market and be able to ship worldwide. We are proud to be all-natural, plant-based, vegan, organic and cruelty-free. Those are more than just “buzz words” to me. Our Eco Masque and Peel is a proprietary take home mask unlike anything else out there -it’s a take-home version of what I do to my clients the day of the Oscars, Emmys, any big event!
I love challenging cases and I would see young clients with acne that had gone to every doctor in Los Angeles to clear their skin with no success. After a few of my treatments, the skin had cleared and the results were dramatic. Older clients who had a lot of sun damage and had neglected their skin saw dramatic changes to their skin. It has always been so gratifying for me to be able to help people. I can’t tell you how often I have people tell me that their skin is better now than ever before. Ecologica is my joy and my passion.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I have many diverse interests and am always interested in learning new things, traveling, and meeting new people. I always had a vivid imagination… my mother told me that when I was about 4 or 5, I lived in a neighborhood without any other small children. I would play in the backyard portraying all the Disney characters for hours while taking on each character’s voice.
Our next door neighbor told my mom that she thought that there were about 7 kids in the backyard with me. So I have always been driven by creativity. I strongly believe that if you can imagine it, you can create it, and you should never stop trying and never stop growing.
