Meet Tyler Chanel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Chanel.

Hi Tyler, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my blog, Thrifts & Tangles, in 2012 as a way to showcase my natural hair journey. During this time, I also got really into thrift shopping. I had so much fun putting together inexpensive outfits and decided to start sharing those on my blog as well. I loved the online thrifting community and met so many amazing people through my blog and through Instagram! Initially, I really got into thrifting because it was an inexpensive way to update my wardrobe, but after watching the documentaries River Blue and the True Cost, I learned that thrifting was a more sustainable way to build a wardrobe. I had no idea how much of a negative impact the fashion industry had on people and the planet. This information was really eye-opening, so I started sharing this info on my platforms. This led to a lot of impactful conversations! Now my overall goal is to encourage people to give thrifting, sustainability, and their natural selves a chance! When I’m not blogging, you can find me modeling for sustainable companies. I’m signed to Role Models Management in LA. They are an amazing agency whose mission is to connect their models with brands that align with their values.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Every now and then I question if the content I create actually matters and if it actually makes a difference. This is probably the biggest struggle I face as a creator. Thankfully, I have an amazing community and every now and then I’ll receive a message from someone saying they went thrifting for the first time or that they made a sustainable lifestyle change after seeing my content. This reminds me that what I’m doing is making a difference.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I create YouTube videos, blog posts, and Instagram content about natural hair, sustainability, and thrifted fashion. I love encouraging my community to give these three things a chance! My goal is to encourage others to live a more earth and money-conscious lifestyle! I try to make my content relatable, educational, and positive. One of the things I’m most proud of is I created an influencer rate calculator to help other creators in my field price themselves fairly. Since using my calculator, several creators were able to land their first 5 figure brand deal. I’m also very proud of being featured on the Tamron Hall show. I discussed composting and sustainable wedding tips, which was super fun!

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
People might not know that I was a huge mall-rat as a teenager. I used to love shopping fast-fashion and went to the mall every single Sunday for years. It’s funny because now I avoid the mall at all costs. I’d much rather go thrift shopping. Another thing people may not know if that I love going to Disneyland and wearing thrifted Disneybound outfits.
