Meet Troy Solomon of ABearNamedTroy in West Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Troy Solomon.

Troy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My career really started back in 2012 when I started posting outfit of the day posts on my Instagram. I had just come out of the closet and it felt really liberating sharing the true me with the world. I experimented with my clothes and with my Instagram feed and really created a clear aesthetic.

Over time that has evolved into what it is now and I’ve expanded creatively beyond what I ever thought was imaginable. I started with just 2,000 followers and now I have over 55,000. I get connect with people all around the world through social media and my music and that is such a beautiful gift.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I can’t say it was a smooth road the entire way and I’m also not anywhere near done growing so I’m sure I’ll endure a few more bumps ahead. Being the “big guy” has always posed a challenge in society. There are hardly any clothing options for plus size people in general, let alone plus size men. For the longest time mainstream media ONLY wanted to present skinny, able-bodied people on TV and in music, but through social media we have seen a clear change. More and more people that look like me are creating opportunities to share their story and more and more opportunities are being given by mainstream institutions as far as representation.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am a singer and body positivity advocate. I believe everyone has the ability and entitlement to love themselves free from any judgment.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Authenticity. As a society, we crave realness. For the most part, gone are the days of idolization of public figures and placing them on these pedestals of perfection. Through social media we’ve seen what we perceive to be the truth. We’ve seen real personality and that is something I always try and bring to my social media. I am me and I want you to know me.
