Meet Trenton, Scott, Alex, Wendy and Remi Kohno of Sushi With Attitude in Koreatown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Trenton, Scott, Alex, Wendy and Remi Kohno.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Trenton, Scott, Alex, Wendy and Remi. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
WHAT WE DID BACK THEN: Six years ago at 626 Night Market, my family and I had this CRAZY idea to all work together on a business. So, we started a small food stand that was named What Float Ur Boat.

The crazy idea started as a concept around “Productive Entrepreneurship” meant to stave off unemployment and under-employment through the creation of opportunities for college students. Back in 2014, my brother and I were still in college and this venture provided us with a crash course in what it takes to operate and run a business. Through the years, we’ve hired college students in need of jobs and many of them stayed on till they graduated college and had full-time jobs.

HOW COVID CHANGED THINGS FOR US: However, amidst these times caused by the Coronavirus pandemic and unable to attend the night markets, we decided to change our attitude and launch a new Cloud Kitchen concept, Sushi With Attitude (SWA). In this Cloud Kitchen, we’re able to utilize a commercial kitchen for the purpose of preparing food for delivery or takeout only, with no dine-in customers. It allows us to accommodate for the changing times and start a virtual brand at minimal cost.

OUR PLANS MOVING FORWARD: Thanks to the unique cloud kitchen format, we are able to adapt to the current difficult environment of the pandemic. We hired a recent communications/professional writing graduate from UCSB. She has been shadowing myself across all areas of marketing (PR, Digital Marketing, Promotions, Customer Relationship Management, etc.). The goal is to offer her an experience that will help her stand out from her competition and hopefully land a full-time job in the near future.

SWA is aiming to fuse sushi and musubi together, called a SushiBi (currently in the process of being trademarked). A SushiBi in three words is: sushi with attitude, and we get creative and combine odd combinations that seem to just work, like Chipotle Caramelized Bacon and Avocados along with Salmon Poke and Flaming Hot Cheetos!

There has been a growing need for exciting food deliveries and we’re rolling up some fun and exciting deliveries that hope to make a big difference for people eating at home.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest challenge we had to overcome was this Coronavirus pandemic and unable to attend the night markets. So we came together and decided to change our attitude and launch a new Cloud Kitchen concept, Sushi With Attitude (SWA).

Sushi With Attitude – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Mostly summed up the business in the first question, but we’re aiming to fuse sushi and musubi together, called a SushiBi (which we’re in the process of getting trademarked). These SushiBis are flipping the script of regular sushi bentos and including food we know and love but pairing them into odd combinations that just seem to work. Like Chipotle Caramelized Bacon and Avocados or Salmon Poke with Hot Cheetos.

What we’re most proud of is be able to stick together as a family during these times with the mission to help college students or recent graduates that are struggling to find their first step in their career. The way SWA is set up it allows these young adults to learn what it takes to operate and run a business.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment has to be not letting outside factors discourage us from growing as a family and as a business. It’s launching this new and exciting venture that no one really knows is going to be successful. Challenging not only yourself but putting others in that driver’s seat really is the greatest achievement anyone can ask for.
