Today we’d like to introduce you to Vicky Iskandar.
Vicky, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
If you had asked for my story a year ago, I would have told you about my life as a social media director. It sounded exciting then to be producing content for brands and writing smart copy for a luxury publisher, but life has its own ways of showing you possibilities you’d never imagine. While working full time, I also started advising clients on Classical Feng Shui and Chinese Astrology as a side gig after I got my first certification in Chinese Metaphysics in 2012. Feng Shui is about being in synergy with the environment and aligning our individual energy with the energy of our living space, while Chinese Astrology is part forecasting, part destiny consulting, part intuitive, and a lot of strategic life coaching.
In 2017, I was given the opportunity to buy a home. Feng Shui naturally served as my guidance in selecting the location and the actual property. It took about a year (and hundreds of floor plans) to find one that satisfied my criteria, and in the process, I started working with real estate agents whom I met during house hunting. It was soon after my offer was accepted that I came to realize how much I enjoyed practicing Feng Shui and that I could and should do it full time. It is in my Taoist lineage, after all. So, I am now fully devoted to helping others create or find an ideal space to manifest a better lifestyle. A home blessed with excellent Feng Shui brings effortless growth, happiness, and support to its occupants, and this is what I’m experiencing with my own home.
Has it been a smooth road?
Let’s just say that there were some twists and turns and I feel that I’ve finally come full circle. I’m grateful that all my past experiences in luxury editorial and digital marketing, and my MBA degree background have helped me with setting a very solid foundation for what I’m currently doing. Running your own business involves trials and errors – I’m constantly learning and getting ideas from each unique experience I’ve had with my clients.
We’d love to hear more about Functional Feng Shui.
As a Feng Shui consultant, I advise my clients on how to activate the positive energies of their homes and offices and subdue the effects of negative ones. I also help buyers find a supportive home that will bring harmony and growth. Many of my clients are real estate agents who come to me for help in prepping their listings. A Feng Shui’d home tends to sell faster as we are naturally drawn to positive energy.
I name my business Functional Feng Shui because my Feng Shui recommendations have to serve a function. A house visitor should never know that the gorgeous accent table in the living room is actually a remedy. Or that the beautiful plants are in a specific corner for a reason.
Diversity is what sets me apart from others in my field. I’ve been writing, editing, and blogging since the early 2000s after I finished my MBA program. That was also around the same time I started studying astrology. My daily updates on Instagram @goldriverastro are a unique blend of Western Astrology and Chinese Astrology.
The world of Chinese Metaphysics is deep and have to be supplemented with continuous learning and other intuitive mind/body practices to access guidance from the spiritual realm. My Chi Gong practice and regular trips to Asia have helped me gain a deeper connection to my ancestral knowledge.
You won’t catch me name-dropping – I respect and value my clients’ privacy. They are free to refer me to their friends and family, of course!
What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
For those who are just starting their professional journey, the first step to finding your life purpose is to try everything you’re ever curious about. Experience life as much as you can – go travel, take fun classes, keep learning from the experts, create diversity in your communities. Take care not to spread yourself too thin, however – unplug from the digital world, be friends with your own self.
