Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Dinh.
Julie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started doing makeup in high school, I started off doing my own makeup and playing with colors on myself, then I worked at Macy’s like a beauty advisor for a while. I quit in 2012 than I actually worked in accounting for about a year and a half and realized it was not what I wanted to do, so I looked up Makeup schools to go to and I found one in DTLA called Michael Vincent Academy. Their beauty program was six weeks long and they send their students on set. At that time, I was working at Nordstorms. I was getting over the job and wanted to quit multiple times. But I had to stay there because that was my only income, I did a lot of free work for two years to build my portfolio and finally met the connections that I needed to quit, I was scared to quit at first because I thought I wouldn’t be making the same amount as Nordstorms. But I took that chance and finally quit, and it was probably the best decision I’ve made. Jobs started to line up and my career has evolved in the past three years. I now work every day on music videos, commercials, & films for celebrities. So, I’m very happy that I decided to follow my dream.
Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely was not a smooth journey, I struggled a lot. But I told myself it will all be worth it. I worked really hard to get to where I am today, it’s been a very long journey. I didn’t get paid for about two years, and finally, I just became friends with the producers and just made the right connection, and finally one day, I met the right person and they changed my life and now, I’ve been booked for every big job that they do. My advice to young women is whatever you want to do, you can definitely do it if you want to do it. Do whatever that makes you happy! And never give up on that.
We’d love to hear more about work.
I’m a makeup artist, hairstylist & stylist. I do music videos, commercials, film, and weddings. I mostly work with rappers, for example, I worked with Chris Brown, Cardi B, Diddy, Migos, Drake, and etc . I’m most proud of myself because I’ve come a long way and I realized this is what I wanted to do and just went for it and I never gave up. There were A LOT of times where I would second guess myself whether or not I wanted to do this. But I pushed myself and told myself that it was ok, I’m glad that I did because if I hadn’t I would probably be working at a desk and be miserable and I wouldn’t be happy.
