Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Comil.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Hi, I was born and raised in France, and I caught the travel bug at an early age. After living in Belgium, Luxembourg, and Switzerland, I took a road trip to California with my boyfriend (who is now my husband) and I fell in love with Los Angeles. Thanks to the Diversity Visa Lottery, we were both awarded green card holders, we packed our bags for Southern California, and headed west.
In my newly adopted sun-kissed land of L. A., I launched House of Comil, a premium style blog that mixes French and California vibes. It quickly became a fashion go-to hub that showcases new designers, style influencers with quality-driven mindsets, and an eclectic range of artists. Fashion has always been a way to express my creativity. I love experimenting with different styles, from preppy, rock bobo and sport chic to glam looks. But underneath it all, I remain definitely French: Effortlessly chic, natural, with a hint of playful seduction.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As much as I love blogging, it is a pretty tough experience. Influencers, bloggers, digital marketing, social media are kind of new topics. It is very difficult to discover, learn and manage the ins and outs of this industry, to educate people and being educated at the same time. Plus, there are constant changes in the algorithms which manage the search results of the web and social media, that really require to be a strategist.
For young women, I will really recommend starting their accounts as a hobby, it will help them to learn a lot from being a creative and being a digital expert. It is a hustle so don’t expect an overnight success. Do it to learn and to share what makes you happy. Ultimately, you will make friends and meet like-minded people who will help you with your projects.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about House Of Comil – what should we know?
In my 20’s, I was a former mergers & acquisitions manager for an international consulting firm. But I am also a late millennial.
At school, I learned about the old way to do marketing and to sell a company. I thought that using digital was the best way for me to connect with like-minded people.
When I turned 30, I decided to share my passion for fashion and to create a style blog. I thought that using digital was the best way for me to connect with link-minded people.
Since I started my blog, I got amazing opportunities in the fashion industry. I was featured on NYFW, Farfetch, WhoWhatWear, Thrive, Maje website. I also attended New York and Paris Fashion Weeks. I organized events for international and local fashion brands and I was a creative producer for professional fashion and beauty photoshoots.
I am a hustler and since the beginning, I am a strong believer that the digital industry will revolutionize the way we will consume, we will dress and get inspired. For me, this journey requires a lot of work and passion but also it has been truly amazing!
So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
Yes, I truly think there are opportunities. Media allows us to have a unique voice and to easily meet other people. Some women have been able to build an empire thanks to the digital industry (Arianna Huffington – Founder of Thrive Global and Huffington Post, Natalie Massenet – Founder of Net A Porter, Kylie Jenner – Founder of Kylie Cosmetics, Katherine Power and Hilarry Kerr – Founder of Whowhatwear, Morgane Sezalory – Founder of Sezane, Chiara Ferragni – Founder of The Blonde Salad and Chiara Ferragni Collection, etc.)
I feel that the support system around women has never been that strong thanks to the launch of these social networks. There are so many inspiring stories and ways to connect with these entrepreneurs.
