Meet Tiffany Kim of SNACK by Tiffany in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Kim.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My foray into baking began, like many, when I was but a young’un in sunny SoCal. Even so, my baking career didn’t take wing until high school, when I had a need to be productive with my spare time. It was then that I discovered my innate passion for baking. However, because I attended an international high school in Taiwan, there were no English baking classes and I had only limited access to baking blogs and cookbooks. I became a self-taught baker because of that and went on to teach my own baking classes in Taiwan, and then in China when I lived there for a year after graduating from college.

When I returned to California, I was given the opportunity to work at Merely Sweets, a darling little bakery in downtown Brea. There, I got to see the ins-and-outs of owning and running a bakery, which was always the dream but I never saw it as truly feasible. It was also during that time that I discovered a passion for teaching, leading me to become an ESL instructor, which I still am today.

All throughout, I have always baked for friends and family, whether for celebrations or “just because.” So in January 2017, shortly after my husband and I got married, my husband encouraged to think bigger and more boldly about baking – and that’s how SNACK by Tiffany was born. We never really struggled with naming the company, because, simply put, “snack” is my favorite word, and I believe that everyone should be able to enjoy a sweet treat between meals!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has most certainly not been smooth, but that’s when you learn the most! I had no knowledge of business before SNACK, so my business-savvy husband was both my cheerleader and motivator in the early days, and he played a significant role in setting up the finances and social media platforms. After a time, however, we both agreed that it would be best for me to embrace full ownership of the business, and this taught me a lot about myself and what a new marriage needed to flourish.

Additionally, baking itself requires a lot of patience and manual labor. Though I expected this from my training at Merely Sweets, and still think fondly of our steel-laden kitchen, I found that baking from my home kitchen presented its own unique challenges. On top of that, being a teacher also means that I am baking whenever I have time, usually at odd hours.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with SNACK by Tiffany – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
SNACK by Tiffany is a made-to-order bakery that prioritizes quality desserts with quality ingredients. Our goal is to ensure that your order is just the way you like it, and our baking philosophy is that sharing is indeed caring! We even provide delivery all throughout Los Angeles and Orange County.

Our best-seller is the brookie, or brownie-cookie, which is a gooey brownie nestled in a crispy-chewy chocolate chip cookie shell, garnished with just a touch of sea salt to bring out the flavor. They have the best of both worlds, and these babies have been featured at various events, from weddings to quinceaneras to baby showers. Our menu also features customized cakes, cheesecakes, and a variety of desserts to satisfy your sweet tooth needs.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
While SNACK has been open for just over a year, we’re currently in the middle of expanding our menu to accommodate those with special diets, including gluten-free and dairy-free items.
