Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Florence.
Taylor, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Studying finance at the Marriott School of Management (BYU) had me heading towards a career in banking or commercial real estate development. In fact, three months before graduation I was deciding between two offers from companies in those exact fields.
However, one day during that window of time my father-in-law suggested I look in to a career in healthcare administration. He had a number of contacts in the industry and set me up with some interviews… the next few months became a whirlwind adventure. After many meetings, shadow opportunities, and interviews – I accepted a position in Orange County as an AIT (Administrator in Training) one week before graduation. My wife and I grew up in San Clemente, CA and hoped to return to raise a family in Orange County so this was a dream come true for us.
After an intense training and licensing process, I eventually landed in Huntington Beach as the Executive Director/Administrator of a Post-Acute Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. With an amazing full-service staff of over 100 employees including nurses, therapists, nutritionists, and more and in close partnership with physicians, we cared for elderly individuals needing around the clock nursing care, therapy services and dietary management to recover from a wide variety of health conditions including strokes, falls, joint replacements, pneumonia, and much more…
Fast forward almost five years during which time I saw thousands of patients and families cared for, worked with amazing employees, made a change to a new care facility in La Jolla, San Diego, and was blessed with the birth of my twin daughters I started feeling the need to make a change away from the ED/Administrator position.
Most days I would leave before my daughters were awake and arrive home after they were asleep. So a desire to have more family time and a vision about providing a hands-on service for families thrown into the unexpected fear of a loved one’s care transition (typically an aging parent) lead me to start my own company. And I’m so happy that I did!
It’s now been almost two years, during which time my little company Transitional Care Solutions has been able to help hundreds of families navigate smoothly through the challenges of expected and unexpected care transitions and crisis. The majority of my time is spent helping families find long term care solutions for their loved ones like assisted living communities and smaller care homes that fit their needs, location desires, and budget.
Although it’s hard to see families go through these difficult times, I’m so grateful to help them and love that my company has provided a service that helps to alleviates their burdens.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There are big companies out there that provide automated online support to families in these situations. These companies basically only give a list of care options without any personal touch to help families. Because of their size they also have huge advertising budgets and capture the attentions of many.
My challenge has been educating the medical community that our services are hands on and tailored to families – we actually spend in person time with families and personally help them walk step by step through their loved one’s care challenges. Exploring and understanding the care options available to them.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Transitional Care Solutions – what should we know?
Transitional Care Solutions is a service organization that provides complimentary support to families as they navigate care transitions to more permanent settings such as assisted living communities or smaller care homes.
At Transitional Care Solutions, we understand that navigating healthcare can be confusing and frustrating. When making important decisions about their loved one’s future, families deserve clear explanations about their options. Which is why everyone on our team, Taylor included, has earned some type of healthcare license or has years of healthcare experience. We are proud that our team members know healthcare and can bring experience and knowledge to each family’s unique care situation and exploration of care options that fit very specifically to their needs.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My family, especially my wife, has been such a big support to me. Their belief and trust in me has made this possible. As any entrepreneur will tell you it’s scary and risky to start your own business and nearly impossible without the support of family behind you.
I’m also grateful to my network of healthcare providers who loved my idea of helping families and have spread the word about my services and helped my little business grow faster than I ever expected.
