Meet Joaquin Tamayo of Tamayo Jewelers in Boyle Heights

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joaquin Tamayo.

Joaquin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
The company was founded by my father Luis Tamayo in 1968. We were the first retailer open for business in the all New El Mercado de Los Angeles. My father a master watch maker started the store with his brother Joe “Curly” Tamayo and bro-in-law Arturo Jauregui working for him and we never looked back. We have had our good and bad days but because of my father’s drive and the quality of the merchandise along with great service we remain a viable and healthy business to this day. The trust of the community and our clients has played a large part in our success as well. Even after 49 years!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth no, rocky at times but we never lost faith in our mission. The ups and downs of the economy play a big factor as El Mercado is a tourist destination and we exist on tourist dollars for the most part. My father’s abilities as a business man and his relationship with our customers is really why we still open our doors every day.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Tamayo Jewelers – what should we know?
