Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamar Levine.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Tamar. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I have always been inspired by films. As a child, my dad was a music video and commercials director and had some old photo and film cameras I used to play with.
My mom was a writer, so I grew up around images and storytelling. When my friends were playing dress-up, I was directing them and telling them how to act. Directing was something I always thought I was going to do, and in fifth grade, I even listed my life goal as “win an Oscar for directing.”
As much as I loved film and directing, I also loved photography. Ever since I picked up my dad’s Nikon F1 in 7th grade and started being able to freeze specific moments, I was hooked.
In high school, I attended community college photo classes and started a track to become a photographer. I graduated from Art Center in 2005 in the photography program. Since then I have made a living shooting photos for fashion magazines, musicians, and various ad campaigns, and directing video for commercials, music videos, and narrative projects.
Has it been a smooth road?
As I’ve always freelanced, it definitely was never (and still isn’t) a smooth road. It’s difficult not knowing where your next paycheck is going to come from. I thrive on being busy, and love creative challenges. I would choose to be stressed from being too busy over being stressed because I’m not busy enough. Work is far more appealing than enforced vacations.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I believe I have a strong and unique visual style. Since I do a mix of things–photography, directing, and creative directing–I understand multiple mediums.
Since I started out as a photographer, I really understand lighting, color, locations, actionand composition, and how to manipulate these to tell the story I want to tell. To me the business of being a photographer / director includes not just the shoot, but every consideration before and after, including pre-production, production, and distribution. Every factor needs to work together to enhance the message of a piece, on time and within budget, allowing for creative surprises. I’m proud of the detail and thought I put into every project I do.
