Today we’d like to introduce you to Tabbatha Mays.
Tabbatha, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have been very fortunate to have had the opportunity to travel and see much of the world. In my travels, I noticed that no matter where I went there seemed to be a common denominator between all young girls – low self-esteem and identifying only with their physical bodies instead of their intellect; a general lack of direction or opportunities to get there. On the way, back from one of my lengthy travels my flight was redirected to circle a few times before landing and while this time noticing the air traffic controller with the lighted batons guide us in I thought: “that’s it! Young girls are walking around with their dreams, their spirits hovering/circling in the air waiting for someone to guide them in so their spirits can land.” Spirits Landing was named in that moment. I wanted to create a safe space/place for girls and women to workshop their lives. A place to feel supported by a sisterhood. A place that if and/or when I had a daughter I would want her to go to see an example of a working village. In 2008, I handpicked my first student(s). First it was sessions and workshops in my home, next it was driving around Los Angeles to other people’s homes to teach, next the Spirits Landing curriculum in schools as after school programming to finally our own office facility. Today Spirits Landing services on average 50 girls and women across all of our programs in person and via skype around the world. Next stop: a brand-new leadership Academy!!
Has it been a smooth road?
The decision to transition and begin on this road was very smooth but the road has not been smooth. Spirits Landing involves human growth and development. Growth for most humans is not easy and can be very uncomfortable. You become deeply invested in each person and their success which can be a double-edged sword. It is one thing to want a thing and another to be brave enough, disciplined enough or patient enough to receive or achieve that thing. So sometimes clients push you away or resent you for the very thing they asked for. This was very difficult to navigate in the beginning. Lesson learned: there must be a balance between giving 100% investment in a life but allowing them to lead and knowing when to let go.
Secondly, there has been the challenge of finding the right team of people all with the same goal and integrity in mind in order to continually build the organization. Lesson learned: no matter how long it takes, the RIGHT team is worth the wait in order to create a mastermind group.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Spirits Landing’s mission is to nurture the growth and development of girls and women ages 12-29 years old by providing them with the tools necessary to discover their greatness, transcend obstacles and become well-rounded leaders who contribute exceptionally to the world’s social, economic and spiritual reality.
We are a lifestyle brand poised to help women create the lives they seek. Whether it is a woman who is unfulfilled with their 9-5 job, a woman who has lost her dream, a woman who seemingly has it all but still feels empty, a mom who has lost herself or someone who knows they have something great to offer but needs a little help getting there. Whichever it is Spirits Landing helps you get there. The Spirits Landing lifestyle is empowering, loving, a sisterhood, spiritual genius, sexy superheroes, game changers, entrepreneurs; women who take responsibility for what they create and their place in this world.
We do this and create this lifestyle through our leadership academy and our soul sessions. Our LEADERSHIP ACADEMY offers an unmatched curriculum, a sisterhood that restores genuine love between women and year-round programs that end in a graduation ceremony. We specialize in one on one private sessions tailored to individual need as well as group activity and learning. Our SOUL SESSIONS offer life coaching, couples counseling and family counseling for those who are not quite ready for the leadership academy or are out of the academy’s age range of 12-29.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes. I feel like Los Angeles is a great place for a business/non-profit organization such as this. It is the city of Angels a place of dreams. I think that it is a place that demands a lot. Los Angeles causes people to place a disproportionate emphasis on a constant striving that causes people to compare themselves to others, strive for material things and lose sight of the basics and what is important. The city and its lights and glamour allure can be distracting. Especially for vulnerable girls and adolescents trying to find their way and navigate all of the images and suggestions of what beauty is on social media. In addition, I think that Angelinos can feel very isolated and alone in a city of pull yourself up by your bootstraps, work hard and make the dream happen!! So, we need help. All of us do. A team, support.
I think is it important for any new entrepreneur to pay close attention to their marketing plan. The city is very spread out and the energy of support and being able to connect to others can be daunting and challenging. However, it can be done and there is ALWAYS an audience for what you are trying to offer.
I am glad even for myself that I have been afforded this wonderful opportunity to connect, and introduce Spirits Landing to perhaps more people.
