Today we’d like to introduce you to Sydney Holland and Courtney Abbiati.
Sydney and Courtney, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Sydney: The Urban + The Mystic is a brand focused on demystifying the world of healing crystals to help people create moments of intention, available exclusively online. Our website sells carefully curated hand-made boxes with various themes, such as meditation, celebration, and gratitude, featuring specific crystals, candles and other accouterments to enable the everyday ability for connection and reflection.
Courtney and I came together first as friends. We are both long-time users and believers of the healing powers of crystals and connected over our passion for the practice. We started The Urban + The Mystic to simplify the puzzling world of healing crystals and to allow people to easily create moments of meaning in their everyday lives. The chosen product format of a box that focuses on a specific theme or area of one’s life allows even the crystal novice to master the practice without intimidation.
We chose to create these boxes in a way where everything has a meaning and a purpose. It starts with the crystals. We choose crystals that we know to work for specific needs, such as black tourmaline, which offers protection or rose quartz, which centers around unconditional love and gratitude. We then work with various woodworkers to build a box out of reclaimed wood that will house the crystal(s), and everything else you will need to create a moment of intention in your life.
Courtney: Our goal is to enable people from all walks of life to easily work with crystals and incorporate them into their everyday activities, therefore demystifying the process. In addition to the crystals, we include a candle from LA-based Voyage et Cie, as well as other items depending on the theme of the box. We want people to be able to create a moment for themselves, or as offer these a gift for someone you love. What better way to say thank you to your child’s teacher than our Thank You box? Or to send a little Love + Light someone’s way by way of our Love + Light Box. Got a friend who’s going thru a break up? Our Heart Healing Box is a way to say “help is on the way”. 
Each box also includes a card with a clear description of its contents and a suggestion on how you can create your moment. We are so excited for customers to experience just how easy it can be to take a minute for themselves and to connect to something personal they wish to focus on.
Has it been a smooth road?
Courtney: When starting a new business, you inevitably run into various challenges, but we are lucky in that we have a true partnership and are able to work through any difficulties together and come up with solutions that will help keep us and our business on track. Luckily with The Urban + The Mystic, Sydney and I have been on the same page about the products, how we want to launch, how to engage with our customers, and so on, so it’s been quite easy and exciting to launch this brand!
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Sydney: The world of healing crystals has been around for centuries, but only recently in our modern day and age are crystals being utilized in earnest to combat real-life problems and help people heal and grow. It’s still very much in its nascency in terms of how many people incorporate crystals into their lives and feel comfortable and knowledgeable about the practice.
But that is what we are trying to change; to make healing crystals easy to understand and access. Hopefully, we will see them become a more mainstream part of everyone’s lives as their value in helping people overcome challenges and celebrate triumphs is unparalleled.
