Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Ellis.
Stephanie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
The first piece ever created was a denim bag and matching blanket. It was a gift for the wife of the Cardiovascular Surgeon, who saved my husband’s life after a massive heart attack. After performing the life-saving surgery, the surgeon’s words to my husband were “you are the luckiest man I have ever met.”
My life and the life of my children would have been devastated, had the foundation of our family not been granted another chance at life. I know that God hand-picked a very special man to save my husband. No matter how much I thanked him, the words felt inadequate. During a conversation with him, I learned that he and his wife recently welcomed their first child into the world. I decided that I would make a baby bag and a blanket for them.
My thought was to use my hands to make something beautiful for them as he used his hands to save someone beautiful for us. After showing the bag to my children and sisters, they urged me to sell them. Since then, we have added sweatshirts, jackets and children’s clothing to the line and are working on custom t-shirts and a men’s fashion collection, scheduled to launch this summer.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to Piece Love and Sew has had its share of bumps. Piece Love and Sew is a 100% family run business, and we all put in as much time as possible while still minding our personal responsibilities.
This translates to late hours and lack of sleep, especially when we are preparing for a sales event. We do not have a “brick and mortar” site, therefore we struggle to find venues to sell our products.
When we are able to secure a sales venue, it can be cumbersome to transport our inventory, racks, tables, etc. to the various locations. That said, Piece Love and Sew is young. We are less than one year old, and we are gaining popularity. As we continue to grow, we are addressing these obstacles
Please tell us about Piece Love and Sew.
Piece Love and Sew creates handmade bags and blankets and reconstructs clothing into a chic one of a kind fashion statement, through acid washing distressing and embellishing.
Though we began with bags and blankets, our sweatshirts and jackets are now the most popular. We recently introduced “Little Pieces of Love”, our children’s line and are taking the steps to soon introduce “Man of Piece” our men’s line, as well as a witty graphic t-shirt line.
What sets us apart from others is the same thing I’m most proud of. That is, our family commitment to this brand and our customers, I believe that the love we share for one another is so abundant that we have enough to share with the world. From the naming of each style to the packaging and the materials used, every garment is considered and reconsidered to make sure that it meets our Piece Love And Sew family standards.
