Meet Sheryl Sims of Shurlgurl Productions

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheryl Sims.

Hi Sheryl, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey with photography began when I was in middle school. I wasn’t even aware at the time that I would one day be doing it professionally. I just knew I really liked grabbing any disposable camera I could get my hands on and start clicking away. Once I developed the photos, I would make photo collages on my notebook binder to show off to all my friends. From disposables to point & shoot cameras, Photography became one of my favorite hobbies. My camera went everywhere with me; from small events, family gatherings, school, church, travel, and more. Later on in life, while attending college I invested in my first DSLR (Canon 60D). At the time, I began to also become interested in video & filmmaking. I would eventually help out fellow peers with their video needs and started booking small events. I also began entering my video submissions to my college Filmmaking Contest, which I was able to win two years in a row for Best Comedy. After college, I began my professional journey working behind the scenes with different media production companies and organizations. I have had the opportunity to work behind the scenes in TV, film, plays, concerts, events and so much more. Whether I was a production assistant, camera operator, editor, photographer, I enjoyed and learned from every experience. Today, I now own my own small media business called Shurlgurl Productions. Where I offer videography, photography and editing services.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There were definitely struggles along the way; starting with the realization of accepting that I was a creative and that the road isn’t exactly planned out for us who want to work in media. Also, just trying to narrow down my niche. Once I was introduced to different roles behind the scenes, it was so hard to choose what I wanted to focus on because I liked everything. Lastly, just learning the skill for photography, video, and editing. There is no overnight training you can take to be equipped in this field. You have to do the work and exercise your patience and consistency to grow in this field. There is so much I know and there is still so much I don’t know because technology advances daily. It’s a continuous learning process, and that was something I had to learn to accept.

As you know, we’re big fans of Shurlgurl Productions. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
