Meet Sheldon Peregrino of Sheldon Peregrino Designs in Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheldon Peregrino.

Sheldon, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My passion for Design and Decor began at an early age when I was living with my grandmother. She would make my costumes for Halloween and for when I did figure skating competitions. I was fascinated by all the beautiful things her sewing machine produced like pajamas, pillowcases, curtains, etc. She encouraged my interest in decorating the house for the holidays like when I made mini-ghosts out of paper towels and stapled them to the garage door. From a 10-year-old boy’s eyes, my grandma was the first “Martha Stewart” and I wanted to be just like her.

My interest in the creative arts grew as I pursued my studies in Dance and Art History at UC Santa Barbara. I enjoyed performing on stage and was also inspired by production elements like lighting, costumes, and set design. The idea of creating a fantasy world further fueled my passion for design.

After pursuing a career in dance and theatre, I decided to go back to school study Interior Design at the Art Institute in Hollywood. During this time, I also began working in Event Planning and Design. I found that being involved in producing events like weddings and bar mitzvahs was similar to when I decorated my grandma’s house for the holidays and when I was part of a dance production.

I now focus on creating environments and worlds for people to inhabit through Interior and Event Design. I am also currently pursuing studies in Theatre Design at Glendale Community College.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’ve always felt the creative desire flowing. Even during periods, I wasn’t working on formal projects, I was driven to work on design projects for family and friends, so passion has never been a problem. My biggest challenges have always been around protecting myself in the process of working for others. I have a tendency to put everything into projects — blood, sweat, and tears, sometimes literally. Keeping engagements balanced and formal as a business, valuing my contributions appropriately, is a work in progress for me, so I can pay the bills and continue to do the work I love.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Sheldon Peregrino Designs story. Tell us more about the business.
We thrive on collaboration and we are always excited to work with a new client. We are also fascinated with each individual’s background and story. Each design project we take on is uniquely tailored to the client’s personal style, point of view, and needs. Our company facilitates the client’s needs from initial concepts to the final product. Space planning plays an important role in both interior and event design projects because it is really about how certain rooms and spaces will be used. We create floor plans to examine the purpose and flow of each space. We then present the client with options in colors, materials, and furniture. As the project continues, we manage all of the work and communication with contractors and vendors. We believe that clear and constant communication with the client throughout the project is important and we are proud of doing that well. Each project we take on is our passion and becomes personal so we will go above and beyond to ensure the success of each project.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
My passion for design and creativity naturally makes me want to share that love with others. I also find it gratifying to assist someone with their own design needs and creative endeavors. I always consider myself lucky when I get to collaborate on a creative project with someone.
