Today we’d like to introduce you to Shauna Garrett.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Shauna. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve always gravitated toward entertaining in a technical sense. I started college as a business management major at Southern Crescent Technical College, quickly realizing that I wanted to pursue a creative career path. I soon became a double major – continuing the business management while also majoring in film and television production – all while working as a stage manager at a local theatre in Georgia. Started my film career as a script supervisor but soon became captivated by the world of lighting. I focused on grip and lighting and earned a certification in it.
Upon graduating, I missed acting (I acted in high school). I auditioned and got into the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in Los Angeles – majoring in acting. Throughout the program, I met and worked with some of the most talented DP’s, gaffers, and crewmen I’ve ever met who inspired and pushed me to keep going with lighting and camera work. Now I am an actor, freelance gaffer/AC/focus puller/grip and camera operator.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No way! During my third (3/4) semester at AMDA a year ago, my father passed away, followed by my paternal grandmother just a few months ago. The past two years have been the hardest of my life. It has encouraged me to embrace mental health professionals and embrace self-care. The struggle has been to stay in touch with myself and to listen to my body and instincts.
There’s also the usual external challenges of being a knowledgeable, strong black woman in a world that often doesn’t respect me or my talent. I’ve learned to prove to myself before I prove to anyone else and earn my respect through the consistency of my own character.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I’m most proud of my message and method as a photographer, videographer, and lighting tech.
Monday Routine Productions’ motto is to “Be your own kind of wild.” I encourage clients to let go of expectations and inhibitions and connect with their surroundings through nature and breathing techniques. MRP strives to influence by refining the person, rather than pursuing a certain outer appearance. MRP mainly does photography and dance videography.
What were you like growing up?
I was really awkward growing up. I always felt like the odd-one-out. But my family was very involved in sports like track and field, cross country, and soccer – my parents were coaches. I was very athletic as a long-distance runner and thrower from childhood into high school – at the end of which I began coaching on a junior Olympic team for two years.
I was homeschooled until 9th grade, where I attended Luella High School for three years and graduated a year above my class. I participated in Theatre for two years and that sparked my love for acting. I had a very small internet presence.
Personality – Wise, I considered myself an introvert for a long time. Now I’m more of an omnivert, reserved but unafraid.
