Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott King.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Scott. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I went to hair school in Washington DC in 2008-2009 while assisting in a salon that I would work at for the next five years. While there I established a full clientele, but I wasn’t satisfied, but I wasn’t sure what was missing. in July 2012 I decided to visit LA for fun. By the end of that trip, I knew LA was where I was supposed to be, so on a complete whim, I moved October 2012 with no job lined up. Luckily I had money saved because starting over is not easy at all. I had to assist various stylists and colorists for about two to three years total. On the side of all of that work, I was building up my portfolio and meeting photographers, makeup artists and wardrobe stylists. I got the contact of an agent from a colorist I knew and I set up a meeting. A week later I started working with The Only Agency. They get me amazing jobs with celebrities whether it be on set or to get them ready for events. I still work in a salon 1-2x a week for my clients that I cut and color as opposed to my freelance work which is mainly styling.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. While assisting those years it is a lot of work for very little money. But I wouldn’t have traded it for anything. You learn SO much. I thought I knew so much because I was a working stylist for 6 years at this point. But honey was I wrong. What is so great about this industry is always evolving so you’re learning something new every day.
Please tell us about your business.
I am a freelance hairstylist that does a lot of styling and extension work on people for photoshoots, music videos, performances, press, red carpets, etc. I don’t know what I am known for but I tend to do a lot of effortless waves/ classic styles. I am just proud to make people feel beautiful and elevate how they look and feel.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I loved being able to collaborate with the brand Petit. Moments on a hair accessory line that just came out this Holiday season 2019. I feel like it the beginning of something fun and great. I get to be creative and see people wear my designs. Its super fun and exciting to see your vision come to life.
