Meet Sawyer Hurwitz of Psychotronic Solutions in Hawthorne

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sawyer Hurwitz.

Sawyer, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I always figured I’d be an artist of some sort, but for the longest time I bought into the narrative that I didn’t possess the skills. My hands weren’t steady enough. My mind wasn’t disciplined enough. I just didn’t have the raw talent. Whenever I would create, I saw the gap between my skills and my vision as an overwhelming divide. And as a result, I gave up on the idea of pursuing a career in fine arts.

But art finds a way. Starting in high school, I got into collage. Since I didn’t believe anyone took collage seriously as an art form, it was easy for me to shirk pretension and focus on the fun of it. As I got more into it, collage became a form of meditation for me — a means of using free image association to process and organize my thoughts and feelings. For six years, I quietly made collages in my free time, rarely showing them and certainly not selling them. It wasn’t until a transformative experience with Alex Grey at the Oregon Eclipse in 2017 that it even occurred to me that my collages were art others would want to see. Within a couple of months of that realization, I had my first gallery show at the Hive in Downtown LA. Since then, I’ve sold many pieces and the value of my work has gone up exponentially. It’s been a wild ride.

At present, my art mostly focuses on themes surrounding eastern philosophy, gender dynamics, and our relationship to technology.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
For the most part, my journey as an artist has been smooth. Aside from the toxic narrative I described with the last question, not much has presented a challenge to my creative process.

Perhaps the biggest challenge is that I’m entirely self-taught as a collage artist. I’ve had to learn what works and what doesn’t purely by trial and error. But technique is a love-making process. The more I devote my attention to my art, the more the answers come.

I believe that my creative instincts and critical eye are honed by the influence of all the artists I’ve loved. I’m just a reflection of their visions. When I think about creating through this lens, I realize that my creative evolution is in good hands.

Psychotronic Solutions – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Psychotronic Solutions is the moniker I’m creating art under now, and what I produce as P.S. are augmented-reality, three-dimensional collages. When you view them through an app, the collages come to life and animate in surreal ways. They are my unique intersection of fine and digital art with an interactive component.

The word psychotronics refers to the study of brainwashing. That’s what I’d like to think my artwork is doing, but in a healthy way. I see images as a symbol-language. When I rearrange and play with the symbols I find, I come to better understand the thematic nuance in their meanings and relations. By mapping out my thought process this way, I aim to create art that communicates heart-centered themes on a subliminal level. Loving expression from my subconscious to yours.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
To me, success is where met needs allow for dynamic growth and self-actualization. So long as I am fed, sheltered, involved with my community, and growing, I feel pretty successful.

My artwork is just an extension of that. It’s one of the ways I communicate with the world and continue to work on myself. Thankfully enough people financially support that expression that I’m afforded the time to keep doing it. Ultimately, I want to give increasing amounts of my time to projects that communicate positive messages and help to heal the world. The more my energy is spent on compassion, the more successful I feel.

  • My work varies in price with originals ranging from $500 to $10,000.
