Meet Sandy Boo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandy Boo.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was a social worker for over 20 years. I was working for the Veterans Administration in Southern California and transferred to the Seattle VA in 2017. Two weeks after arriving in Washington, I got a call from my brother telling me to get on a plane as my mom was dying. I spent the next six weeks in Virginia with my family while my mom was receiving hospice care. After she passed away and I returned to Washington, I was physically and emotionally drained. I continued to work as a social worker for about another year but was suffering from severe burnout. During this time, I kept thinking that I needed to do something else. I had nothing left to give anyone which was not fair to me or my clients. I had been doing some vague planning to start My Curse Purse for a few years and decided now was the time to give it a try. I also felt that women were feeling more empowered and the social and political climate was appropriate for something like this. I did some research and found there was not anything out there quite like My Curse Purse. I registered my business web name and started working on developing my merchandise.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My biggest challenge, in the beginning, was finding vendors to work with that would print profanity. I ended up finding some amazing people to work with and now have good business relationships with them. I still have problems with some fairs and festivals not accepting me to vend at their events because of my products. But overall, My Curse Purse has been a hit at the events I am able to attend. My goal is to get more traffic on my website and do less vending events but that takes time.

Another issue I have encountered is Facebook and Instagram not letting me promote my posts because of profanity.

Please tell us about My Curse Purse.
My Curse Purse is an exclusive line of offensive accessories. I make fun and feisty products for those with a sense of humor. As I stated before, I did research and did not find anything out there that was quite like My Curse Purse. I am happiest when people discover my merchandise and I get to hear them laugh. My umbrella is my favorite thing. I designed a purse also that I am pretty proud of. My socks are probably my best seller.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Hmmmm… that’s a tough one. I mean I have learned a lot over the last year and have met some people that have been super helpful. I might have gone less crazy on stocking up on inventory in the beginning and used more money on advertising.

  • My prices range for $9.50 to $77.50
