Today we’d like to introduce you to Sadie Dean.
Sadie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m an LA native and I started out playing music at a young age. Was always around it, thanks to my mother and music artist Sayed Sabrina. She always made sure to introduce me to new music and always made sure we had instruments in the house. I was drawn to the rhythm section. My first love being the drums and then moved onto playing the bass.
During college, I was playing bass in a shoegaze band “The Garden Angels” – we played a lot of great venues and shows. A lot of the places are now closed like – Safari Sams, Tangier, the original Mr. T’s Room in Highland Park and Room 5 on the west side. One of the most memorable shows we got to do was play a Jeff Buckley tribute show hosted by Jack Osbourne at the Key Club (also, now closed) we did our rendition of ‘Dream Brother’ to a packed house. Buckley’s mom was there and pulled aside our singer/guitarist to thank him and us for a show she knew Jeff would’ve loved. That was incredible.
I stopped playing music for a brief stint and attended the American Film Institute, graduating with a Masters in Screenwriting. I produced a bunch of music videos for European artists, the last one was for the Wu-Tang family (literally left the music video biz on a high note). After that, I produced some short films and a feature documentary, and briefly had a literary manager for my writing.
By 2018, I was really missing playing music and was looking to try my hand playing guitar in a band. So, I reconnected with my high school pal Sergio Gonzalez, who also played drums briefly in “The Garden Angels” and we started writing new songs. Within a few short months we brought in Leslie Bumgarner to the mix, who I met while at AFI (she’s an incredible filmmaker and musician). She brought in a slew of her songs and we just mixed and mingled our sounds. She brought in her pal JD Ramage to play bass, and that’s how “The Coolers” were formed. We like to say our sound is 60s meets 90s rock nostalgia. We’re heavily influenced by bands like MC5, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Sonic Youth, The Breeders, Soundgarden and The Pixies, to name a few.
Since forming, we’ve played all over LA, such as your local hole in the wall bar, The Viper Room, The Whisky a GoGo and The Canyon Club. And we recorded and released our first EP, Troglodyte (which is available on all music streaming services, such as Spotify, Apple Music, Soundcloud, etc.).
We’re now looking to get back in the studio for 2020 to record a full-length album. And we just brought on a new bass player to the mix, Sam Peterson, who is an incredibly rad dude.
When I’m not playing music with The Coolers, or guitar with Tilli & the Titans (which is another awesome band I’ve joined) or taking naps, my 9-5 is doing marketing for a software company.
Has it been a smooth road?
Taking on any creative endeavor, especially one that is collaborative will always have its challenges. I’ve hit some bumps along my creative journey, notably with creative partners that were definitely life learning moments.
With “The Coolers” we have our ups and downs (like any other band), but we always find a way to make everything work out, and we’re a closer band and friends now because of it.
What else should our readers know?.
“The Coolers” are a rock band. I guess you can categorize us as blues-rock/garage rock. I play guitar and drums in the band and am one of the main songwriters.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
We have a lot of great food options, bars and a large music scene.
The traffic in LA is incredible…I really enjoy the “me time” that I get when it takes me an hour to get 10 miles across town.
