Meet Sabra Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sabra Johnson.

Hi Sabra, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I have been interested in fashion since I was a child. The thought about pursuing fashion professionally was never a consideration for me because my parents (especially Mom) expected me to follow a traditional education and career path. I also did not have role models for how to pursue a non-traditional career.

Throughout the years, my passion for fashion never subsided, and I used myself as a canvas to exercise my creative styling passions. During a period of great job dissatisfaction, I started my style-focused Instagram account as a way of sharing photos of my style to document my outfits and connect with other like-minded people. I became inspired by those I connected with and felt empowered to express myself more fully.

During the same period, I met a woman at a social event who was intrigued by my style. She asked me to help her makeover her wardrobe despite the fact that I was not a professional stylist. I was excited and nervous at the same time. She became my first personal styling client. In addition, she was the publisher of an online magazine (no longer in publication) and asked me to be a monthly style contributor. I wrote my monthly column for almost a year before publication was suspended.

I have recently launched my own blog and website MyStyleIsMyBrand.com, where I share style tips and information, and content about my other interests including wine and home décor and improvement.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Ha! It hasn’t been smooth at all. The biggest struggle has been imposter syndrome. It’s been me asking myself why anyone would want to listen to what I have to say.

Another struggle has been time. I am interested in so many things, and try to live life to the fullest. This made sitting still to concentrate on the technical and business aspects challenging, which also prevented my progress. I finally enlisted assistance to help me with developing my website, so all I had to focus on was the content that I have a passion for.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a content creator and stylist. My content is targeted for anyone interested in personal style, but particularly women 40 and over. So many messages in society tell us that if you’re over 40 you should be following a certain set of rules as it relates to getting dressed. That usually includes covering up, wearing less color, and dressing “maturely”. My mission is to inspire and encourage everyone, no matter their age, to wear what brings them joy. Getting dressed should not be stressful, it should be fun. It’s how I start every day with joy, and I enjoy sharing that with my community.

My style is my own, so it automatically sets me apart from others. Additionally, I’m not interested in telling anyone what to wear. I’m more interested in helping them find their own personal style and wear whatever brings them joy.

What are your plans for the future?
My website just launched on November 21. This was a huge accomplishment. After six years of dreaming about it, it finally happened. I’m looking forward to establishing more partnerships with brands that understand that the 40+ community are a viable and lively demographic who still participate in style.
