Meet Ryan Greene of Monarch Athletic Club in West Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Greene.

Ryan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As a physician going through the various levels of training required to practice, I had grown increasingly frustrated trying to introduce long-lasting healthcare intervention for individuals who were seeking a plan that would allow them to achieve optimal health and wellness. The current system, although the best in the world in acute and emergent situations, is not designed to promote preventive intervention that may be translated into greater longevity with less incidence of disease for individuals in every day walks of life.

The majority of our population, proven by numerous large scale studies, live in a state of chronic lifestyle associated disease that can be corrected with intervention focused on how we move, how we take care of our selves and recover from the various stressors of our day, what we eat, how we monitor what is going on inside of us, and creating a community around us that is supportive for all looking to achieve long life free of disease.

Thus, the idea came to me for Monarch Athletic Club while in fellowship at The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN to create a space that at its foundation will get people in the door using a behavior that people are willing to build into their everyday routine (fitness), but provide a program that also uses validated and evidence-based technology and intervention to promote compliance and objective change that may be monitored in real-time by a multi-disciplinary team requiring each member simply to show up and allowing the team on-site to take care of the rest.

Fortunately, an opportunity came to me through mutual friends who lived in Los Angeles that allowed for the necessary partnerships and funding to further develop and launch this concept in a demographic where health and wellness are actively sought and its importance well understood.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road certainly has not been smooth. I jokingly refer to our facility as Monarch 2.0 as Monarch 1.0 was located in the building directly adjacent to our current location but under different ownership. The previous landlord decided our concept would not fit their idea of what should be contained on their property after we were over 50 percent built out forcing us to pack everything up, eat the capital already invested in the buildout, find another location and raise more capital.

In the end, the universe had greater plans for us as the new location is larger, more open, and allowed for more beneficial partners to participate in our development offering numerous skill sets previously not included in our model.

Please tell us about Monarch Athletic Club.
We are unique as we are the first evidence-based, physician-directed “one-stop-shop” for health and wellness. Not only are members treated to an ambience and fitness experience unlike any other with unlimited personal training and physiotherapy (facilitated by physical therapist and chiropractor always on-site) and preventive medicine (all overseen by myself), but they are just required to show up and all aspects of a validated lifestyle associated wellness program curated to their specific goals and physiologic design.

All members have a full preventive medical, physiotherapy, and training evaluation included in their program re-evaluated quarterly to ensure their program is trending towards their goals set upon joining, but they have the ability to participate in a multi-disciplinary program that changes or questions can be fielded by any component of the wellness team in real-time in person or through our app-based technology that has previously been validated and currently is in use with numerous collegiate and professional sports organizations.

We emphasize principles over trends and emphasize that compliance and consistency with basic lifestyle components (movement, nutrition, recovery, community and preventive medicine- the 5 foundational pillars of Monarch Athletic Club) will allow any individual to do what they want for as long as they wish to do it throughout their lives.

We emphasize that common thing are common, and if you focus and aim to optimize the 5 foundational pillars of Monarch Athletic Club, the body will take care of itself as it is the most sophisticated machine ever created.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Every member of our team, from financial partners to those operating each aspect of our program are at the top of their field and incredibly talented. We would not be successful without their expertise as well as ability to appreciate the importance of what we aim to do as a team. Specifically, Paul Freschi CSCS and Dr. Mariel Schofield DPT, CSCS have been pivotal in developing the training and recovery protocols implemented daily for our members. I am fortunate to work with these individuals daily and for their dedication to our collaborative effort

Personally, I was fortunate to have numerous mentors throughout medical school, residency, fellowship and beyond that encouraged me to pursue my passion in health and wellness even if it meant stepping outside of the traditional hospital environment. Ultimately, many said if they were in my position and had the opportunity to live their lives over, they would choose the exact path I have chosen as they have seen the difficulties and inefficiencies of our healthcare system as it currently exists in promoting longevity and reducing the cost of healthcare provision in our country.
