Meet Rotem Hacker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rotem Hacker.

Rotem, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have been acting since I was six years old, at the community theater in my hometown. Theater was my first love; passion, I took theater classes in high school as my main major. The longest break I had from acting was when I joined the Israeli Defense Forces for two years and three months. When I finished my service, I worked hard for a year saving money, then I traveled to the U.S looking for Acting programs in film schools; mainly in New York and Los Angeles.

September 17′ I started the acting program in New York Film Academy in LA. The program opened my eyes to more possibilities in the film industry, I learned film editing, producing and started developing my own scripts. I got an internship with the post-production team of NCIS:LA at Paramount Pictures. Had the chance to work on movie sets, from student films to big budget studios films (w/ Ben Affleck).

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It wasn’t always easy. One of the first challenges was to get my family ‘on board’, they weren’t very happy with me chasing after what seems like an unreachable dream and, being FAR from home, all by myself. Moving to a new state, new culture, when I am only 23 wasn’t easy at all, I’m just starting to realize my duties as an adult at my own country, and now I’m here, starting ‘fresh’. Alongside I had to stay committed to the school program and do my best as a student. It was hard sometimes remembering why I came here in the first place. Building myself a community; familiar people & places was very important for me, to have a feeling of belonging.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am an actress, writer & producer. These days I am working on my first TV series, that will include seven episodes and three female leads, hopefully to get distribution with one of the big networks or production companies such as Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, etc. The more I learn about the film industry, the harder I fall in love, with all of the film-making process, from writing to casting through production to post. I see every set as a new opportunity to learn and grow; talking to PA’s, lighting department, wardrobe and set designers the same as I talk to directors, producers and DP’s. I see myself as a story-teller and I approach the film and acting process from psychology point of view, the research, the complexity to the final product. I want to create and be a part of conversation-provoking projects.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I believe that with integrity, consistency, open mind & heart I can go far. Film is a collaborative process, being friendly and team-worker is important, they say you can’t make a film all by yourself. And no matter who you are or where you came from, stay humble, treat people with respect, director, movie star or a PA.
