Meet Rosemarie Christopher of Rx Research Services Foundation in Glendale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rosemarie Christopher.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Rosemarie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Employers frequently want experienced candidates who can hit the ground running. So where is someone to get their first experience? This conflict frequently came up when talking to both employers who use our services and candidates looking for jobs.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has been very hard. First, we struggled to get federal and state recognition and funding for our program. Then funding agencies only wanted to provide money for education, which doesn’t address the problem of hiring managers wanting experience. Many do not understand how hard and expensive it is to hire and train someone.

The term apprenticeship is new to life sciences and not recognized. For example, the term apprenticeships, which are long-term and paid, is often confused for internships, which are short-term and unpaid. This requires a lot of time getting people to slow down and understand.

Potential mentors to apprentices push the idea off to the human resources department, who find it easier to say no than take the time to understand the offering. Potential mentors sometimes argue that they don’t have time to train someone, even though the amount of work the apprentice can take on far outweighs the amount of time needed to train them.

Some companies are only looking for a cheap source of labor and don’t see the program as building their workforce for tomorrow.
