Meet Robert Theofanis of Theo Estate Planning in Manhattan Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Theofanis.

Robert, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Since law school, I knew that one day I would start my own law practice. After graduation, I began my career working for my dad’s law firm. It was a wonderful experience. He was a great boss. He gave me tons of responsibility right off the bat but was also very generous in sharing his wisdom and expertise.

Eventually, however, I found that the area I was practicing in wasn’t for me. I decided to pivot and took another job. In early 2019, as my second child (my son) was approaching his due date, my wife and I decided that I should just take the leap and stop delaying the inevitable. So, I gave notice, took an unpaid paternity leave, and hung up my shingle!

Looking back, I’m so glad I took this path. I’m an entrepreneur at heart so building a practice from the ground up has been extremely fulfilling.

Has it been a smooth road?
Most definitely not!! When I started my practice, I didn’t have any clients whatsoever. It wasn’t the kind of situation where an attorney leaves a firm and walks out with half of dozen paying clients. I was at zero.

I’ve had to built every aspect of my practice from scratch, from the website to the client base and everything in between.

Everything is a challenge and everything takes way, way longer than you think it will. Looking back, I spent a ton of time in the beginning on things that didn’t pan out. But, honestly, I believe those are the growing pains that every business needs to go through.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Theo Estate Planning provides estate planning services (trusts, wills, etc.) to clients looking to prepare their families for the future. I focus on young families, typically with dual earners and minor children.

I’m proud that my clients trust me to assist them with some of the most important decisions they make, like naming guardians for their children.

There are three ways I’m different than the average attorney. First, I strongly believe in pricing transparency. My clients pay an all-inclusive flat rate. There’s never unwelcome surprise waiting for them if they pick up the phone and call me. In fact, my packages include unlimited communication. Second, I employ a client-first philosophy. How many times have you showed up early for a doctor’s appointment only to wait 20 minutes in the lobby? I spend quite of a bit of time thinking of how I can make my clients’ lives as easy as possible when they deal with me. Finally, my flat-fee packages are designed to work for life. They include unlimited amendments and unlimited communication for life.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
100%. I love the South Bay, I live here and I work here. From a business perspective, there’s a huge pool of potential clients and, from my experience, South Bay residents like to deal with local businesses.
