Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Lebsack and Kimberly F. Davis.
Robert and Kimberly, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
We were both studying different disciplines of Art at Cal State Long Beach and independently wanted to improve our photography skills. We met in photo class just before Kimberly graduated and began working full time as an Assistant Art Director. Once Robert graduated he went to work full time as a studio artist at an Interior Design Firm. We vigorously sought out every opportunity to work outside of our full-time jobs, whether it was graphic design, photography or mural gigs and after multiple collaborative efforts we decided to start a firm specializing in design, photography and art. We both worked our day jobs increasing our knowledge and skill base until we had enough freelance work to sustain our lavish lifestyle, of Cup O’ Noodle and crappy apartments. Slowly but surely, we kept at it and retained more and more clients through the years, and still do work with our original clients to this day.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
After 12 years in business together, it can still be a roller coaster ride sometimes but that’s what keeps it interesting and us on our A-game. Definitely not a smooth road in the beginning, like all worthwhile endeavors it had ups and downs. We started with college debt and no capital, so we struggled at first to get our footing. Working together has never been an issue, but finding enough work to make ends meet didn’t happen right away, so after leaving our full-time jobs we worked odd jobs but always in the industry, and eventually we were able to commit full time to Chance Artworks. Finding regular/secure clients was a mix of luck and persistence. We like to say all we need is a toe in the door, if given a chance we will exceed expectations. After a few years learning many hard lessons we gained the ability to say no when we should, and could now recognize scammers, untrustworthy people immediately.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
As a creative services firm we specialize in photography, graphic design, fine art, public art.
We offer our graphic design services to large and small businesses. Often, we work on corporate overflow design that companies can’t handle on their own or function as a business’s art department but without the costly overhead. Our professionalism and experience serve us well in that capacity as we can perform under tight deadlines and are able to fuse our styles with any existing brand identity and still produce compelling and original design solutions.
We are known for our photography skills, particularly event photography. We bring our fine art sensibilities mixed with our determination to create amazing images and capture the important moments and atmosphere without being intrusive.
Robert is known for his mixed media paintings. He is represented by Artspace Warehouse gallery in Los Angeles and Zurich, Switzerland has had work shown and sold all over the world with collectors from New York to Hong Kong.
We are proud to be a successful minority and woman-owned business. We are also proud of our determination, following our passion and sticking to it no matter the dismal odds of success. Making a difference in the world through art and following our dream.
What sets us apart is that this company is more than a just a job to us, it’s everything. We live for our work, so we approach every new gig with passion and urgency. Unlike a large corporate design firm, we offer a personal touch, 24\7 customer service, flexibility, fast turnaround and, most importantly, a vested interest in our clients’ satisfaction and ongoing success. Also, unlike a freelance designer, we offer the benefits of team work and dependability. The two of us have different strengths that we bring to the table and our ability to bounce concepts off each other to refine an idea is paramount. So, our clients get the quality and versatility of a large high-end design firm with the accessibility and streamlined work flow of a freelance designer, the best of both worlds.
What were you like growing up?
Robert: I was a quiet, shy kid. Growing up in a Military family we moved a lot so I spent most of my time alone and with my big sister. I have always been into art and obsessed over comics and anything visually creative while dreaming of becoming an artist.
