Meet Robbi Jan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robbi Jan.

Robbi, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am definitely on a journey! I have just moved to Los Angeles from a small little town on the East Coast of Australia. I know what you’re thinking- “She moved to LA (the city of angels) from a sleepy little beach town in Australia, why?” For Acting? Modelling? A man? No…

For me. For a new start, and to do something that was uncomfortable, extremely unlike me and very scary. To prove to myself that life is a rollercoaster full of twists and turns that can evolve into something beautiful if you just let it.

I graduated from university four years ago (when I was 21) and worked full time in my families cosmetic dentistry practice. I also studied business and accounting at university so that I could take over the practice in all facets, not just the patient load. My dad also practices dentistry, so it was a great experience having him as my mentor.

Dentistry was always my passion, I lived it. I breathed it, and I knew I wanted to study it – I knew I wanted to practice it – until one day I just didn’t anymore. It’s a scary feeling to lose the passion you once had for what you know and what you’re good at – but I listened to my heart. After taking most of last year off, I spent time travelling and in October 2019, I decided to move to Los Angeles. My university degree doesn’t work here (most medical degrees don’t), and I don’t want to go back to dental school right now, so it has been a big-time of transition for me finding my feet in this town, making new friends and starting a new career!

I am now working full time in social media and currently studying to become a health coach. I am working to grow my platforms and learn a new normal. I have absolutely loved living in LA.

Has it been a smooth road?
Moving countries has been a huge challenge for me! Australia and America have a very similar culture, but of course the road has been bumpy. There are obviously the big things; Like meeting new people, new bank accounts, and not knowing your way around- but I find that it’s the small things that can often be intimidating.

Showing up at one of the busiest airports in the world (LAX) with two bags and looking around and feeling completely alone is one of the weirdest, most liberating feelings, that I have ever felt or could even explain. Leaving the security of an incredible paying job that I worked my whole life to have, being away from my family and my friends – these are all things that I have had to navigate. Taking a bet on yourself is scary but ultimately, so worth it.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
Social media has now become a full-time job for me – I post primarily lifestyle content on both my Instagram, TikTok and my YouTube. It’s been such an eye opening, but also rewarding job. I love talking about my faith, and I understand being vulnerable is important. I strive to have a balance of showing highlights, but also real life.

I try to be encouraging- I am a huge advocate for mental health. I think it’s so incredibly easy to be overwhelmed by life sometimes, and if real people that we can relate to, talk about real things – then sometimes it makes things just a little bit easier.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The opportunity!! There are so many incredible people from so many incredible places all over the globe. I have met some really inspiring people here – A lot of people move here to pursue their dreams, and that can be tough. There’s a lot of competition, and it can be intimidating – so it’s nice to be around people who are dreamers and doers.

Least, I would have to say the traffic. It was also eye opening to move here because there is such a large homeless population. This isn’t something I have ever been exposed to before.
