Today we’d like to introduce you to Reggie Colvin.
Reggie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I attended a now defunct college for fashion, where I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in fashion design. I was very focused on womenswear but towards the end of my college career I shifted to menswear because I felt that it made more sense to who I am and there was also space for the women in my life to wear my clothing. Many people would tell me I wouldn’t make it in fashion trying to get jobs as a young black man and the only way to see success was to do something for myself.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’ve had such a hard time getting traction of any sort in this industry. There’s been a lot of bumps in the road with interviews, freelancing and not getting paid. Honestly the easiest part of this journey for me has been doing Huey Lewis USA. Working on my own projects allows me to do exactly what I want and push my own narrative in clothing. I make all of my clothing by myself from concept, to sketch, to final product, so I deal with all trials and tribulations of being a fashion designer.
Huey Lewis USA – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Huey Lewis USA is a combination of comedy, contradictions, black history, workwear, and America overall. The art projects I work on usually consist of workwear sihlouettes blended with sportswear and random Ideas made up in my head. I’m known for making durable clothing that often uses large shapes. People mostly know me for making fashion inspired by vintage workwear. I’m most proud of being able to do exactly what I want and take as much time as I want to make sure my projects come out with the results I want. Me being a very opinionated black man with a deep interest to learn my history as a black man in America sets me aside from others. I learn about this country and my place in it and I try to flip what I’ve taken in on its head and present the outcome to the world. I have no concern of how people feel about my art because it’s mine.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I think when doing something the way I do, there is no set way to do things. The old ways of fashion don’t exist to me, hell! the ways of fashion in general mean nothing to me. I move at my pace and do what I want to do. Having more capital would be nice but in hindsight I wouldn’t have money to do it either. The best thing you could do is keep it moving and learn as you go. Just make sure you are learning as much as you can.
