Meet Redondo Beach Makeup Artist: Yuli Jung

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yuli Jung.

Yuli, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’m from Seoul, South Korea. Ever since I was young I’ve enjoyed applying my own makeup, and I soon became interested in fashion and makeup shows. I simply loved them. I came to realize that I’d be happy applying makeup for other people.

When I moved to New York a few years ago, I was immersed in the makeup and fashion world even further and knew I wanted to this to be my career. I moved to sunny southern California and attended Cammua Makeup Academy in Hollywood. There I refined my techniques, developing expertise in applying eye makeup, matching foundations to skin color, airbrushing, and hair styling.
Now I’ve started my own makeup studio, and enjoy every second of my work.

Has it been a smooth road?
Because I moved from South Korea just 5 years ago, my English speaking/listening skills were not good enough to do business in the US. But just being persistent and getting customers allowed me to gain confidence. And the customers really liked the makeup I applied for them and since I naturally have a friendly personality, the language barrier did not matter as much.

What has been the proudest moment of your career so far?
I think the proudest moment for me is when the customer is super happy. Few weddings which I did make up for, the bride was so happy and they shared with me their wedding photo. I am thrilled to know that I helped their wedding day special.

Tell us more about the struggles you’ve faced along the way.
Because English is not my first language, I had to overcome a language barrier. But I learned to just trust in my abilities and have confidence that I will do a great job.

What’s your outlook for the industry in our city?
Yes! Since LA is the 2nd biggest city in the US, I’m able to work with people from all over the country. And there are so many models and weddings that take place in and around LA. I would recommend if they are starting their career to perhaps live centrally (around downtown or Hollywood).
