Rasheed, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up in San Bernardino. My family moved there after my father died when was nine. If you know anything about San Bernardino, growing up there don’t have to look too far for trouble because it finds you. I started this interview with my environment and the death of my father because those elements took me on a journey of searching and finding some good and some bad things.
Along the way I met some great people and I met some bad people. Imagine this, when I say bad some of my closest childhood and teenage friends are either still in the streets hustling, on drugs, or in jail for murder. My difference is a small one but great one to say the least. Although, we all started off at the same foundation fatherless, no guidance, and having something to prove to the wrong people.
The thing that made my outcome different was my faith and the willingness to do the work no matter how dark things in my life seemed at a young age. In exchange, the opportunity to run two businesses has been a possibility. I have also been presented with opportunities to travel to different parts of the world doing what I love, evolving my purpose. My faith and purpose have truly pulled me forward, I have been running a 6 figure marketing agency over the course of nine years. Let me continue telling you a little more about myself, I am a college drop out, three times to be exact and my last job was at McDonalds when I was 17.
I have been fortunate enough to sit at tables with top CEOs, been mentored by an actual king, shake hands and meet great men and women that have played parts in changing the world and creating impact. So how did I get here, it was simply exposure by a man and many others that believed I could succeed. The gesture was a simple statement “you should start a business” and “I believe you could own a business doing 6 to 7 figures a year that would create impact.” My question was what is impact?
Has it been a smooth road?
Entrepreneurship is a battle of skill and development along with being aware of people, the industries, and emotions. Some of the things I battled with were balance of life and relationships whether they were business or personal. A lot of times, my personal life took a backseat while my business life was laser-focused and I was intuned with what I was creating.
I soon found out what anxiety and depression were and I may have been laser-focused on my creation but the rest of me was off my health, my family ties, and my faith. All of these issues would soon affect my businesses and my role as a leader. I was not performing the way I needed to be, I was not growing which meant neither were my businesses or team. I needed time to rest. It’s not that I didn’t want to evolve, I just didn’t have the mental or spiritual energy for it. Therefore, it was time to rediscover and revive my intention and why for having and creating a business. I have a creed that I live by, “your purpose never changes it only evolves.” The meaning behind my creed is when we get stuck in a pit in life after we have discovered our purpose it must evolve or die you must protect it by continuing to grow it and remembering to never give up because you’ll soon find out that failure and success live right next door. So that’s what I continue to do everyday whether in the community helping the less fortunate or focusing on the end consumer in our marketing for our clients.
