Today we’d like to introduce you to Qieer Wang.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m raised in a pretty artistic family, my uncle and my mom were both fine artists for a while in their early ages although none of them chose to pursue art as a serious career. I grew up reading comics, watching cartoons, and anime like a lot of my peers. I wasn’t certain about my passion until sophomore year of undergrad. That was when I started to experiment with drawing with markers, color pencils, and pastels in my diary. As for animation, I didn’t find the spark until late 2015 during my grad study.
I grew up in Chengdu, a Southern city in China, and I majored in Game Illustration back in my undergrad. These few years provided me with the most important knowledge and aesthetics. A year after my undergrad, I decided to quit my job and move to the US to pursue grad school in illustration. During these two years, I had a chance to attend an animation workshop and started to make shorts right afterward. I learned puppet animation and built up my digital animation skills from there.
Has it been a smooth road?
I think each visual voice has its own structure of thinking behind it and I love to play and experiment with different materials and formats. Remembering how I find the right formula for one specific visual solution can be challenging. I also try to channel between fine art and design. The push in the back of my mind can stretch myself too thin from time to time.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
My work are flowy, vivid and improvisational. I’m inspired by and rely on my visual memories very much. It’s not necessarily accurate to compare to reality, but if it resonates well with the emotion that I’m aiming to withdraw, that would be the perfect expression to me.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I’ve been taking more and more animation projects in recent years. In the next 5-10 years, I’d be interested in creating a few animation TV series, and meanwhile, exploring paintings.
