Meet Peter Schroeder of Telzio in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Peter Schroeder.

Peter, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Telzio was started back in 2013, when I was working on another project. I needed a phone system with a simple IVR menu and a few international phone numbers. I didn’t have a huge budget, so after some research I found out that my only option was to build one myself.

After a few days of coding, my result was so good that I started seeing a business opportunity. At this time, I was still living in Denmark and was waiting for my visa to move to the US. I had sold all my stuff and my apartment in Copenhagen, and moved to northern Denmark to live with my dad while waiting for my visa. This was during one of the harshest winters in years, so I was stuck indoors without anything else to do than build on this phone project.

It turned out that it would take 5 months before my visa was approved, so when I finally moved to LA, it was with a fully working beta of what’s now become Telzio.

Today, 4 years later, Telzio has grown to a large, worldwide customer base, which counts prominent companies like Facebook, Airbnb, and Lyft.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
At Telzio, we’ve inevitably experienced our share of struggles that all startups go through. Everything from dealing with vendors who over-promise and under-deliver, to the amount of time and effort involved in getting funding to accelerate growth. All in all, it hasn’t been too bumpy of a road for us. We’ve had a clear vision of what needs to be done, we’ve followed it and we’ve seen the incremental victories as a result.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Telzio – what should we know?
Telzio is a cloud based communication service, providing full-featured phone systems to businesses. We’re known for having exceptional customer service, and we lead the industry with the best uptime and call quality. We never sacrifice quality with our product, and that has led us to a position where many of our new customers are referred by existing Telzio customers.

I’m extremely proud of our home-grown platform. Every aspect of our product is built in-house by our world-class development team. A number of established players in the telecom industry have personally told me how impressed they are with how much we’ve accomplished with such a small team. What they have spent years on building with 100+ developers, we’ve been able to do with much less and much more quickly.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Telzio is all about the team. We have a small but extremely skilled and dedicated group of people, all pulling their weight. Every single person is an expert in their individual field.

Besides the core team, we’ve been lucky to get a few advisors on board. One of them, Andy Abramson, is a veteran in the telecom industry and knows everyone. He’s been a valuable resource for us throughout the journey.
