Today we’d like to introduce you to Patrick “P.Kaldone” Joseph.
Thanks for sharing your story with us, Patrick. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
My musical journey started back in 2003 in Boston, Massachusetts, when my late brother, Francky, started making beats and asked me to help him write some raps. I was reluctant at first, but I admired my brother, so I started writing to the beats he was making. Around that same time, I started playing with the software. I would erase his melodies and use his drum patterns to produce my beats. The idea to create my own record label, MafiaSoul, came about when I was in 10th grade. I was motivated by the sounds, by the writing and started working with four of my classmates on their music and assisted in their musical development. Within three months of deciding on moving forward with MafiaSoul records with my brother, we built a studio and recorded day and night. Music became my life and number one passion. I realized how much love I had for music as well as helping aspiring artists and producers find their sound and voice.
The music scene in Boston wasn’t taking off, so I decided to move to Atlanta and start over; that was when I first met Mr.Hanky. We recorded a whole EP together but only released one track called “Catch Me On TV.” I then started managing producer Dun Deal for a little under a year when we decided to run a studio together, and I assisted artist, Vory, in the development of his sound. The opportunities in Atlanta allowed me to decide to move to Los Angeles and find one of the best studios in the city, Melrose Sound. We would spend a whole day in a session working non-stop. We were living, breathing, music and within three months Vory landed a publishing deal with BMG, and later a record deal with Capitol.
The next artist who had an impact on my journey was R&B singer and songwriter, Kellz. I’ve managed and developed MariiBeatz who’s currently signed to Atlas Music Publishing and since starting in 2003 I’ve had the pleasure of working with Gucci Mane, Kris Wu,Vory, MoneyBaggYo, Trinidad James, Mickey Shiloh, and countless others.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey hasn’t necessarily been a smooth one, but every bump in the road was a lesson worth learning, for example, when I realized the importance of doing splits for my work. People in this industry tend to catch amnesia once money and paperwork get involved. My advice to any artist, producer, or songwriter would be to make sure that you inform yourself and handle your business correctly. So many times we get lost in the creativity and the love of the music that we’re creating, that we forget this is a business.
Please tell us about MafiaSoul Records.
MafiaSoul Records is a full-service record label, production, and management company.
We specialize in artist development, music distribution, and publishing administration. We’re known for being about the music and treating every client like family. As a company, I can say we’re responsible for over 100 million streams combined from all of our clients stemming from songs that we’ve written, produced or released. As a record label, I pride myself on the fact that we don’t follow the norm in that I’m here to help turn artists, producers, and songwriters into their own leaders so that they can succeed when dealing with traditional label structures in the industry. At MafiaSoul, we want to see our clients succeed, and I provide the tools and opportunities for that to happen. That’s the greatest joy for me planting a seed and then being able to watch it grow.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
