Today we’d like to introduce you to Oskar Laffont.
Oskar, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Hi! I’m a painter, teacher and film director based in LA for the last seven years. I’m originally from Mexico, I moved to London, UK t 16 to study fine art in London, UK. Followed by an MA in filmmaking. My graduation film won the Liv Ullmann Peace Award and I received a Special Human Rights Award for defending Indigenous Rights by the Mexican Government. My work is usually champions diversity and defends racial, and social justice. I am currently in pre-production of my debut feature film titled “Going Live”, a comedy/thriller about a technophobic film director who’s believes he’s a subject of a covert surveillance program as life begins to unravel for the world to see. As for my painting, I have exhibited extensively in the US, the UK and the Mexico. I am a surreal painter that loves iconography and my pieces often have secret esoteric symbols from across the world. I am also currently painting teacher at the Palos Verdes Art Center, the oldest art institute in greater Los Angeles, were I teach painting technique and history from amateurs to semi-professional/professional artists of all ages.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being an artist that lives and dies for his work always comes with a bit of bumps, moving continents twice pursuing my dreams has been a challenge, particularly arriving in a city when no one knows your work. There’s been los of knocking on doors.
Paint Pictures – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
One of the things that I am proud of a creative is that I am a voice of inclusivity, which is why I fell in love with the diversity of Los Angeles. It doesn’t matter where you come from, people come here from all around the world to pursuing their dreams and it doesn’t matter their sexual orientation, social status, color of their skin, we all get a shot here. I try to reflect that in my work through casting and hiring choices but also the messages in my work. We are all one.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I had my first painting solo show at 8 year’s old. It was a small exhibition but it made realize what I wanted to do with my life. I am an extremely shy person and I found then that for the first time that I could use art to express my deepest emotions and that was extremely empowering to me at the time.
