Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Granger and Lala Soum.
Ashley and Lala, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Lala and I met ten years ago; two minority teenage girls trying to maneuver their way around a small high school in the heart of Newport Beach, California. We clicked right away and have been best friends ever since. After graduating high school, we both received our bachelor’s degrees from California State University, Fullerton; I was a Communications major while Lala studied Broadcast Journalism.
After graduating college, we hit a transition period and began having the “what are we going to do with our lives now?” thoughts. Post-grad depression is real and something that’s not talked about prior to graduation. The “real world” is a scary, but yet so beautiful. After having conversations with our friends and colleagues, we realized there were so many other people who felt the way we did and we knew we wanted to do something about it.
On February 7th, 2019, we created Okay Girl Podcast; we started recording weekly in our “mini” studio (we made) in my bedroom. Gotta start somewhere!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In the beginning there were a few trial and error moments, which comes with starting anything new, but the hardest part about this was actually getting started. We came up with the podcast idea and knew we wanted to do it, but we were also nervous to get on the mic and release our content to the world.
The RSS feed was not our friend in the beginning. We didn’t realize that we would need an RSS to upload the content to steaming platforms, but after doing some research we found Anchor.fm and it saved the day. Aside from technical struggles, we had to get used to hearing ourselves on the mics and playing with the volumes to see what sounded best for our listeners.
We enjoy releasing new content and getting feedback from our listeners which helps us so much!
Okay Girl! Podcast – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Okay Girl Podcast is an all-inclusive podcast about everyday life and everything that goes along with it. A few of the topics we discuss are: mental health and wellness, finances, astrology and manifestation. Okay Girl is a platform for creative individuals to come in and share their experiences about what life has taught them. Our content is a real and raw, but we make sure to have some fun with it too!
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Going into this, our goal was to reach at least one person. We aren’t doing this for numbers because we genuinely want to help others through experiences and challenges we have faced throughout our lives. We are proud that we met our goal and were able to reach hundreds of people within the first year of launching Okay Girl Podcast.
We are looking forward to growing our platform and eventually we would like to have an Okay Girl tour and travel to different cities all over the country speaking at different schools and events. Okay Girl is available on the following streaming platforms: Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Anchor!
