Meet Novi Brown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Novi Brown.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Thankfully, my mom was adventurous and curious enough about life that she passed that on to me. I was born in Berlin, Germany and spent about 12 years going between there and the US. I started my modeling career in NYC while I was going to school for Theatre at CCNY and working at hot nightclubs. A horrible hair cut is what lead me to be natural and embrace the new state of who I was becoming. Through my experience as a model, I learned that many times artists aren’t as well-rounded as they ought to be. Going on set and a MUA doesn’t have your foundation shade to hairstylists not knowing what ‘to do with your hair’ to photographers not properly understanding how to light different skin tones. It infuriated me – how could you be an artist? To me, I could not be that artist. To be a well-rounded model and actor, you must understand movement from in front and BEHIND the camera. I started to photograph myself because I knew how I saw myself and no one had captured it yet. Then I started practicing on others and realized how much my modeling has taught me and what I could bring as a photographer. All in all, when you shoot with me, you’ll laugh, learn about life, know how to use your body more fluidly and have some bomb AF fotos.

Please tell us about your art.
I like to describe my photography as ‘CRISPY’ aka zoom in for the receipts. Mastering my photography so retouching is at a minimal – oh, and because I want to see REAL faces again. I also want to represent for the brown women and women of color that are behind the lens. We need more female storytellers if we want to participate in the conversation.

We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
Wow, this is a good one! Umm, I say go out more! I always step out with a purpose to meet someone! You never know what someone is doing, never underestimate! But, if you’re at a party or bar – talk about your work! Don’t be shy of your art.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
Thank you for asking! Catch me on ‘gram @novibrownfotos and www.nbfotos.com for my photography work. More of my work is featured on my personal page @iamnovibrown – super selfies and hair/makeup videos. You can support my work by telling a friend or 10! Word of mouth is the best form of advertising. I work with brands, models, actors, kids, products, events, weddings – I don’t have limitations.
