Meet Nikki Kern of Kern Represents

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikki Kern.

Nikki, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I got to where I am today by going through a lot of trial and error! I graduated with a BA in Photography thinking I’d make it as a photographer, however that didn’t last long as I fell in love with the production side of still photography. I got my start working for the amazing Tricia Burlingham of Artist Rep Inc. I discovered there my love of working with photographers and not being one.

From there, I worked as a model agent and eventually an artist agent in San Francisco for about five years- which I really found my passion. When my husband and I decided to start trying for a family we knew heading back to our roots in SoCal was best. It was there that we took the plunge and started our own company of representing stylists and hair and makeup artists.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Absolutely not! Like starting anything new, the decision to start a business of our own was terrifying. Our industry is very competitive, and we knew we had to come out strong.

The positive was knowing that the artists we were signing had complete confidence in us and their work spoke for itself which helped with marketing and getting our name out there. We pride ourself on being a family-oriented business, and all our artists are forever a part of the Kern Represents family.

Please tell us about Kern Represents.
We are a creative agency with artists based in LA and SF. We represent prop stylists, wardrobe stylists, food stylists and hair and makeup artists.

We pride ourselves in the relationships we create with not only our amazing artists but with all our clients. I think the fact that we are more of a mom and pop business sets us apart from others and it allows us to be more personal with our clients.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I don’t think we would have done anything differently. Even with some roadblocks we still found ourselves being busy and expanding our agency!

My husband always tells me to “trust your gut,” and I’ve done that throughout this whole experience and I so happy with how things are within our company.
