Meet Nick & Sarah Simile

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick & Sarah Simile. Them and their team share their story with us below:

We are Nick and Sarah Simile, a husband and wife wedding photography duo. We are High School Sweethearts and have been together almost 20 years! We had always been creative on our own but were looking for more ways to spend time together, travel, go on adventures and work in a fun creative environment full time where we could have control of our schedules. Sarah had done Photography all her life but had taken a break from it for a few years. Nick, who had stopped being the frontman to his heavy metal band, started to fall in love with photography and then came the question, should we do this together and try to make a business out of it? So we decided to go for it and never looked back. We have always loved anything to do with the outdoors. We love to hike, bike, surf, cycle and snowboard. We felt like this the perfect career for us to combine aspects of our love for adventuring together with our passion for photography. Our business thankfully seems to be growing as are we, as photographers, business owners, both partners in life and now in work. The ultimate goal is to travel the world and create beautiful art capturing moments of love and joy.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest struggle we have had, which we probably share with most small businesses, has been the Pandemic. Our bookings were really beginning to pick up at the end of 2019 and with the world closing down our photography business came to a screeching halt as well. We completely understood for safety reasons that weddings had to be postponed, and we supported that, but it did make running a primarily event-based business virtually impossible. Even some of our smaller events like elopements had to be postponed or canceled due to national parks and other locations being closed. We had multiple cancellations, reschedules, and just general chaos throughout the past year and a half. Not to mention, It was so hard to witness the heartbreak many of our couples felt having to put their dreams and big day on hold. We’ve tried to support them the best we could by staying flexible and understanding with the changing dates and schedules. It was definitely a struggle to rebuild, but we are hopeful this year will see the end of the pandemic and everything can begin to get back to some sort of normalcy.

Another struggle we’ve had is figuring out how to navigate becoming business partners after being in a relationship for so long. It has been a learning experience for us both, but we try to know when to turn off work mode and make time for plenty of date nights.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are primarily Wedding and Elopement photographers but we also photograph maternity, small business branding, portraits and everything in between. We always love to push the boundaries artistically and we strive to continually be learning, trying new things and growing as artists. We love collaborating with our clients and creating amazing art that everyone involved is excited about.

That being said, our true passion lies in capturing people in love. We absolutely love taking those intimate personal moments and creating something beautiful. We are mostly known for our unique dramatic style, using a lot of warm tones and incorporating the golden glow of the sun. We love using dramatic landscapes and epic locations to create amazing, powerful images. We are most proud of the fact that we were able to look inward and realize we weren’t happy in a regular 9-5 job and figure out a way to switch gears and build a business from scratch into what it is today.

How do you define success?
Success for us is defined by consistently creating a body of work that we are proud of. Our greatest joy is when we receive messages from our clients that can’t believe how amazing they look and are in awe with the way their photos turned out. Through our art, we have created this network of amazing people that have gone from acquaintances to clients, to friends and it is an incredible feeling. Of course, everyone is looking for financial security and stability but to us, the adventure along the way is what makes it worth it. Eventually being able to travel the world through photography would definitely be a success to us.
