Today we’d like to introduce you to Nellie Valencia.
Nellie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
It started when I lived in Huntington Park California and my mom enrolled us in Wilton cake decorating classes, I was ten years old. Years later my mom passed away, my best friend helps me get a cake decorating job at our local grocery store, after realizing people were requesting me to do their cakes I thought I could do this on the side! Then after having my second daughter my husband and I agreed that I could make cakes at home and be a stay at home mom. Yay!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
After my mom passed away, I didn’t want to do much that reminded me of her. But then some years after I realized making cakes brought back those beautiful times I had with my mom and I loved reliving the memories I had when we had those classes together. She also made cakes at home (including some of her sisters) so I think it was a matter of time before I started doing it as well.
Nelliecakes Designs – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I make cakes, cookies, pumpkin rolls, Biscochos (A Short bread cookie dusted with real cinnamon sticks and sugar) a traditional cookie in my family, I also get the popular unicorn cake with Rainbow cake inside. But what I mainly get orders for is my royal icing cookies, in all different shapes and designs. I am most proud of is my Returning customers. It’s the best feeling having them come back and knowing they love what I make. What sets me apart from others is I don’t have a Set cake flavor, filling flavor, or design list. I love that the customers and I can mesh our ideas together and I can create exactly what they wanted.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
That I get to watch, my daughters grow, also this interview ha ha Ha! And I’ve had the chance to create cookies for a local business to add to her beauty subscription boxes (trigger happy cosmetics) another proud moment is I get to use all the creative skills my aunts and grandma from Mexicali taught me, and pass it down to my three daughters.
